IrishRunner's Running Log

IR,

As I’ve mentioned, I’m against the powers that be locking threads on Exiled, but if you requested it for your running thread I think it would be a good thing just to get people seeing some more clear action on the move.

What do you think?

Sure. I can do that. Hope the wedding is good!

Sunday 28th July 2019
15 miles @ 8:26/mile
Longest run in almost a year. Legs felt fine until about the 13 mile mark and then started complaining. They really didn’t want to do the last mile. Went out very early - 6:30am. Hard getting up at that time on a Sunday but the weather is so nice and cool and it also means you don’t come home and feel half the day is gone.
Total miles for week: 40 miles

One of those sessions that just wipes you out. Character building as one of my running buddies says.

1.25 mile w/u
4 x 200 meters with 200 meter jog recovery [Avg time: 39.6 secs]
3 miles at Threshold Pace [Avg pace of 6:39/mile] followed by 3 min rest
2 x 1 miles at Threshold Pace [Avg pace of 6:35/mile] with 1 min rest
4 x 200 meters with 200 meter jog recovery [Avg time: 39.2 secs]
1.25 mile w/d

I’m ready for my bed.

Legs started off very tired but gradually loosened out. Lovely evening but still feels very humid.

Thursday 1st August 2019
5 miles @ 7:55/mile
Out at 9pm for a later than normal run. Always enjoy the pace around 8 min/mile. Comfortable enough that I’m not really pushing it, but hard enough that I can feel the effort.

Friday 2nd August 2019
No run. Sometime life gets in the way.

Saturday 3rd August 2019
7 miles at 8:33/mile
Did this one with a buddy who is in his late 50s. Still running a 5k in about 18:30. Back in the day, he was a sub 15-minute 5k man. Love hearing about the crazy hard training sessions he used to do. His coach used to take a small group of runners miles out in the middle of nowhere along a series of country lanes. The coach was still a top runner himself and he’d set a blistering pace on the run. The only way the guys were getting home was to keep up with the coach. If he got too far ahead, they’d be wandering around lost for miles (which apparently happened now and then).

Very tough. Wiped out afterwards. Probably too hard a session for current fitness level but wanted to help gf out with her marathon training session. Lovely sunny Sunday morning, but pace too hard to enjoy it.

Total miles for week: 40.5 miles

Rest Day

Tuesday 6th August 2019
4 miles @ 8:36/mile
Legs are always going to be a bit stiff the first run after a long run. Probably should have done this one yesterday and then could have done something more strenuous today.

Just curious if you’re still running?

Ha. Just about.

Hurt my glute back in August. Every time I’d try to run, it would flare up. Don’t have a physio at the moment and didn’t want to introduce myself to a new one by telling them I needed my arse rubbed.

Anyway, I’ve been back running the past two weeks or so. Slowly building up the mileage again. Haven’t done any speed work yet. Wasn’t going to start recording my runs here until I was fairly sure I’d gotten over the injury. I might as well tempt fate:

Saturday 19th October 2019
3 miles @ 8:20/mile

Sunday 20th October 2019
8 miles @ 8:30/mile

Monday 21st October 2019
6 miles @ 8:30/mile

How’s your running going?

I started 2020 with a goal of 500 miles for the year, which would be a few more than my all-time record. Once COVID hit I started running every day and adjusted my goal to 1000 miles for the year. Everything was going great, but August and September brought a sprained ankle and terrible air quality to Los Angeles. Got back on track in October, then logged 101 miles in November. As of today I’m at 910 miles for the year, if I stay consistent I should have 1000 in the bag.

Doubling your goal is a great achievement!

My own running has been up and down. I managed to run for years without any problems and then started this blog (twice) and picked up injuries (twice!). The past four months have been good. I used to average about 40-45 miles a week most years, but the last two years have been a mess. Since August though, I’ve been managing about 30-35 miles a week without any problems. I’m presuming this post will curse me.

How do you arrange your runs - Are they usually all the same distance and pace or do you vary them? I love doing speed sessions or at least love the feeling of having done them but haven’t risked any this year. Am tentatively hoping to get back to them in January.

One thing I’ve noticed is there are a lot more people out running since Covid.

I have the most boring routine imaginable. I run at 5:30AM, same route every day, a slightly longer variation on Saturday, and Sunday is my day off. I do not work on pace at all - I just listen to and follow my body. Running is a very meditative practice for me - I kind of let my body do its thing and my mind is simply riding along. I’m usually in the 9:00/mile neighborhood, sometimes a little quicker, sometimes a little slower. I’m 6’3" 225 lbs and 47 years old, so I’m never going to be a jackrabbit
