Trolly is inspiring in his weird sardonic way.

What about the tactics of Gandhi if he was really pissed off?

I don’t think I’m responsible enough to be a mod. I’d probably just ban chez/WN and then ignore reported posts and all the other stuff mods are supposed to do.

Also, I’m more or less on board with Cuse’s moderation philosophy and that seems to be a minority view here.

Not seeing a worthy objection. What happens if we hold a vote and 90% say to mod you? I guess you could prove your point by refusing to honor the vote.

I love that scene in the movie, wherein he castigates his wife for her unwillingness to take her turn on latrine-cleaning duty.

Powerful.

It was a reference to this scene:

Both are wrong. Period. This is exactly why the draft is wrong. There are moral red lines. Society can’t function under “whataboutism”. Surely the past few years have proven that.

Exactly.

What’s noteworthy here is that cuserounder just couldn’t, for his own curious and personal reasons, bring himself to do this. Here is one of his rule proposals from the Rule 7 thread…

I, in addition to stating that I’m on his side (to the extent I understand his side), twice suggested editing this along these kinda lines…

Which gives…

Which I, in good faith, and as best I understand, believe that cuserounder, is proposing here.

Instead… he chose, again for his own curious and personal reasons, to go full-on ACer, and spew what is basically a buncha gibberish about ‘morality’ and such.

It seems, that he was much more interested in making some lol-tastical claims about, well a buncha non-sense, instead of acting in a practical and coherent matter to achieve this rule change he claims he is very much for.

Wait - this shit is what I’ve seen people loftily ‘correcting’ others over all the years? A longer hyphen with no spaces? This post has moved me from “Who cares” to “Em-dashes are for psychopaths” in an instant.

To get back on topic, efforts to set rules of this sort should be guided by knowable possible IRL consequences of failing to implement and abide by the rule in question and not by generalities about being nice or pleasant etc.

So what kind of punctuation is this? Is it unifying the two words, such as might justify no space, as the apostrophe in a contraction like “can’t”? Or is it dividing the two words, as a comma does, leaving no reason to crash the two words together and every reason not to?

They’re often used to offset a phrase—sort of like a parenthetical but subtly different—and improve the flow of the sentence.

The em dash is used in several ways. Primarily in places where a set of parentheses or a colon might otherwise be used, it can show an abrupt change in thought or be used where a full stop (period) is too strong and a comma too weak. Em dashes are also used to set off summaries or definitions. Common uses and definitions are cited below with examples.

I understand the practice in question - indeed, I use it frequently - what I’m questioning is the hideousness of:

I understand the practice in question—indeed, I use it frequently—what I’m questioning is the hideousness of:

We never know how high we are
Till we are called to rise;
And then, if we are true to plan,
Our statures touch the skies—

The Heroism we recite
Would be a daily thing,
Did not ourselves the Cubits warp
For fear to be a King—

As they say, “Grunching”! :face_with_monocle: I thought I might add an amusing fact: :face_with_hand_over_mouth: The constructor of the Guillotine, Tobias Schmidt, who brought the ideas and drafts of Guillotin and Louis to practical application and built the very first Guillotine, was granted a patent for it in 1792. Just in time for the Reign of Terror, which as we know sparked ample need for this deadly contraption, this five years patent made him filthy rich! :relaxed:

Schmidt died after the Restauration a wealthy man. I’m sure there is some lesson in there.

Yes…, that will be fine.

God’s English was cultivated at Oxford and refined in Chicago.

Now which one of you psychopaths can explain the difference between

“I hereby–” cuse licked his finger and felt for the wind “–resign my position as mod.”

“I hereby” --cuse licked his finger and felt for the wind-- “resign my position as mod.”

One is in the character’s speech and the other is in the narration (besides using double hyphens that aren’t necessary).

Using fancy punctuation and grammar was one of the leading causes of death by guillotine.

I can’t help it if the forum software was designed by psychopaths, ie does not format double dashes into proper em-dashes.
