Hantavirus naah; Ebola yeah

But not prolonged, close contact, unless the crew is:

I used to think that but now I’m older and have gone on a few they are nice.

We do Celebrity cruises and it’s great. Hang by the pool do some trivia eat a lot and get to see some beaches.

I’m assuming other cruise lines that have 1,000s of kids would be less optimal

Transatlantic from Rome to NYC, half empty ship, no kids, and got to see like 12 different European cities I had not been to before. One of the best vacations I’ve ever taken.

Cruises are very fun and hating on them is boring “wanna be the cool kid” posturing most of the time.

I’ve been on two. One was Disney when the kids were little. That was good for the kids but pretty boring for me. The other was a Viking cruise in Scandinavia, Germany and Poland, which was great, but entirely because of the port calls. It’s a great way to travel because you don’t have to carry your stuff around and spend time getting situated in a bunch of different hotels or whatever. You just walk out and explore the city. Actually being on the cruise ship though? It was pleasant enough, but I wouldn’t be interested in any cruise where you aren’t in port most of every day.

This specific cruise seems incredibly badass. You start in a place called Ushuaia, then go to Antarctica and St Helena! And instead of everyone getting Norwalk virus and shutting all over themselves, they get an exotic variant of the hantavirus and freak out the world (before dying)

Someone has to clean those nasty ass toilets

I went on a couple Cunard transatlantic cruises when I was in my late teens and early twenties and they seemed pretty good. Great food, good entertainment, lots of historians speaking during the day, wine and scotch tastings. Pretty fancy and need to be wearing suit and tie a lot for dinner though. Average age was probably 50-55. If you’re a poker player and don’t mind spending 5 extra days in travel vs a plane it’s pretty good and not all that more expensive vs a flight especially considering all the high end food that is included, maybe not for you if you have 2 weeks and want to spend more of it at your destination though.

One couple was moving back to England after working in the US for a decade and took advantage of their unlimited baggage perk and moved their whole house for free across the ocean. (A large moving truck full of furniture)

This population (this site) got sensitized by COVID19 and has had threads about the next global pandemic about 19 times since then.

Maybe this will be the one. It only attacks the first born.

Look I am willing to grant that I am joyless douchebag, but doesn’t that explain why a cruise would be an awful experience for me personally? What benefit would being trapped in a floating Disneyland with hundreds of well-adjusted normies have for a killjoy such as myself? I fail to see any contradiction here.

Only a few hours until the return of our cruise expert @CaffeineNeeded

The main issue with cruises, like with all-inclusive resorts, or like Vegas and Tulum, is that the quality and the value proposition has massively gone down over the last 25 years. Unless you’re going high-end, you’re basically just overpaying for a week’s worth of shitty food and shitty alcohol.

This is a pretty great video about companies catering less to the middle class, and more to the upper class willing to shell out for experiences

I can see cruises having their place when I’m 75+ or if I have health/mobility issues before then. No unpacking and repacking. No figuring out travel logistics. Generally no language barriers. Head to the buffet or Italian restaurant every night. See some ventriloquist at night. Good times.

Until then, I like actually being in my destination vs. a floating bar/restaurant. Plus it seems like you’re dumped off in cities for the absolute worst hours for sightseeing (~9am - 5pm).

One of my favorite things to do is leave. And i can’t do that on a boat. It would absolutely bother me. Unless I’m the captain, then i can decide when to go to port, that’s roughly equivalent to getting to decide when to leave

We are talking about going on a Japan cruise. Never been to Japan. Would like to see it once.

I have limited palate.

being able to go to like 6 cities and also be able to eat buffet is a nice perk.
