Golf: No Bones, just Bonesaws

“The star-studded duo is in the final stages of creating a new business venture that will see some of top players in the world compete against each other in what the report called, “a non-green grass, stadium environment.””

WTF?

Tiger and Rory have apparently been secretly working on it for a couple years, it sounds like a skills competition in stadiums, almost like a cross between Top Golf and the leagues that have skills competitions at All-Star weekend. They said something about it being like correlated with the Tour stops, so I assume that means a stadium within an hour or so of the tournament, and the skills competition would probably be on a Mon/Tues night.

Apparently a TV network already has an option to pick it up, and they’d also sell in person tix. I think it could do surprisingly well, having seen these guys on the driving range and how absurdly good they are at controlling the ball.

The PGA Tour silly season used to have a skills challenge event (still does?). The Golf Channel’s Big Break also had a bunch of skills challenges.

I don’t remember them being all that interesting, but there’s certainly room to iterate on the idea and make it more compelling.

How about death matches? Lose a hole? Lose a limb. Kind of like hangman, but with bone saws.

Yea or I can just see all of that on Instagram reels or whatever. It seems like a terrible idea. I’m never going to an arena to barely be able to see a ball while they do trick shots or whatever they are planning. John Daly would probably be the biggest draw to this type of event.

I actually think it could be a cool spectator experience, having watched some of these guys on the driving range. The precision they can have in perfect conditions without tons of pressure is unreal.

And by the way, don’t rule out Tiger competing in these and crushing them. No walking required.

Agree completely with the driving range experience. Used to go to the Farmers every year and spend more time at the range watching them stripe it than on the course playing.

Mesmerizing.

As long as they watch out for the sails of the windmill and time the hippos mouth opening correctly they’ll be fine.

Can u make an argument how that is compelling tv for the masses. Even avid fans won’t get it unless it’s in person.

Epic flop!

I don’t think that would make compelling TV for the masses. Quite the opposite in fact.

Was just agreeing with CW that watching the pros warm up on the range at tournaments is mesmerizing.

The thing is if you want to watch the “driving range experience” that is largely very available to anyone who wants to show up to any golf tournament.

People do watch that but watching 2-3 hours of it(in a stadium) would be absurdly boring. People watch golf because you get to see tour level golfers take on hard shots. And they mostly execute. People also watch golf because of the spectacle of the event mixed with the added pressure that event adds. So the majors. Also it’s an incredibly fun sport to gamble on.

This idea that watching tiger and rory play top golf at the staples center would be some big draw is so insanely laughable.

What’s amazing about the range experience is the close proximity you get to the players, standing right behind them, hearing the sounds of pure contact. It’s ery impressive.

Maybe if they did some kind of lighted or glowing ball?
I dont know.

I totally agree that watching some range time of notable tour pros is good. That’s insanely available already. Doing some pga tour dude perfect golf tour in arenas would be a disaster imo.

Like I’m honestly sort of surprised the tour and majors haven’t just made the practice areas private. I’m sure the pros want it and they aren’t big spectator draws outside of Tiger.

Golf for the masses should be like this.

Gotta find one of these courses to play ASAP:

LIV just died. This is going to be sick when The Masters disinvites them all, they can’t get OWGR points and then disappear. They’re going to have to come crawling back.
