Golf: No Bones, just Bonesaws

Maybe the millions of “country club golfers” aren’t all the same? :man_shrugging:

oh i definitely wasnt saying they werent deplorable or racist or sexist because they 100% are, just that they aren’t singularly devoted to Trump the way the LGB crowd is and wouldn’t necessarily switch their allegiance from the PGA and start attending LIV events just because Trump was affiliated. The country club Rs prefer someone like Desantis over Trump not because they disagree with Trump but because they disagree with Trump’s tweets and the way he says the quiet parts out loud, they much prefer their racism to be quiet and more subtle.

And no offense to Pittsburgh but i imagine they dont have many of the posh country clubs with $20k+ a year membership dues that i was thinking of when i made my post.

They have Oakmont, one of the richest and poshest in the entire country.

Golf nit: Merion is a near suburb of Philly

Not a nit, Google Maps hung on me and I thought it was telling me Merion was right next to Oakmont :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Oakmont is funny because the course(s) are cut in half by the PA Turnpike

When I went there (to watch, not play) I was shocked a place so revered could have a literal highway running through it.

I use to play a course with an elevated tee where you hit over a winding road below. It was a big dogleg right where the road ran with the dogleg. Many many balls ended up on the road. I got the roof of a van once. Probably not the smartest layout for a course.

Well to be fair, I am not a guy who would have any experience with the Oakmont crowd. But I bet the country club crowd around Pittsburgh is about the same as suburban areas Columbus, Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Indianapolis etc.

I do have experience playing in member guest tourneys in some of those areas and see them all 95% on the Tucker Carlson bandwagon

There’s not a single player who turned down LIV for “moral reasons.”

Loyalty to the PGA Tour? Maybe.

What they believe is best for the game of golf? Perhaps.

Brand image, legacy, ability to play majors, and sponsorship opportunities? Certainly.

But moral stance against taking Saudi money? Please…

This is just not true.

Country club I’m joining they all seem to be deplorable. I just really hate playing on public courses. I pay and then I have to make sure I keep my damn receipt to show the starter and most likely get paired with some terrible golfers. These terrible golfers will also ask me what I do for a living and for some reason feel obligated to shake my hand after I putt out on the 18th hole. I also can’t stand hearing terrible music coming from others carts. Pace of play is miserable now even though everyone takes carts too.

You’ve just described…Golf.

Or at least golf as I know it having never been a private-club member. Other than less-crowded courses and presumably faster play (important things to be sure), is the private experience all that different?

There are a lot of reasons private golf is nice.

Handicapped tournaments, your own locker at the course, regular groups to play with on the weekend, often nice short game practice facilities, social events, swimming pool for the kids. There are a lot of things you can get at even a lower end private club that you might not at a higher end public course. You obviously lose out on the variety of courses you play but sometimes you can get reciprocal play at other private clubs in your area.

You’re why I have panic attacks on the first hole if I’m paired with someone

Im not the greatest golfer. Idon’t mind playing with golfers that are learning or not very good if they just keep a decent pace.

That’s fine but after I four putt for a 9 on 18 I’m shaking your hand

Well, we all knew this was coming

“The punishment that would accrue to these players from not being able to play in the FedEx Cup Playoffs is substantial and irreparable,” the golfers’ attorneys wrote in the lawsuit, “and a temporary restraining order is needed to prevent the irreparable harm that would ensue were they not to be able to participate.”

Among other things, the players’ attorneys argued in their motion that prohibiting them from competing in the FedEx Cup playoffs would restrict them from gaining Official World Golf Ranking points that would allow them to gain exemption into the four major championships next season.

Seems like FAAFO to me.

I’m not an expert but it does seem to fit criteria for antitrust violation. In general you should not be able to bar contractors from also working for a competitor if you are the incumbent with all the market power, which pga tour does have.

Regardless seems like pga tour has been winning the propaganda war which will help them with the case even if it shouldn’t
