he knows it’s worth more than that
It’s Tiger Woods. I get it.
But that would have been a lot of cash–$1 billion–dished out between broken-body Tiger who continues to assert he’ll never again play a full schedule; and over-the-hill Phil who has yet to break par in a LIV event.
his sponsorships and stuff would likely take a hit as well as his brand and it’s worth quite a bit more than that
Not sure if I saw it here or somewhere else, but LIV makes more sense when you view it as a “making it rain” endeavor rather than a “sportswashing” endeavor.
Classic Mega Yacht:
$400m
Painting that may, or may not, have been painted by Leonardo da Vinci:
$450mm
The soul of American icons:
Priceless
Even if MBS and his pals get bored with LIV in a couple of years and it folds, the point will have been made, i.e. the Indecent Proposal was accepted.
This story is amazing.
All the moralists standing on the “Jack is GOAT” hill have been completely undermined.
Jack also turned down something like $100 mil to be the commissioner before it was offered to Greg.
He was going to take it and his people talked him into turning it down. Pretty sure he got sued by a company he had licensed his name to over it, and that was the impetus of him not taking it.
I’ve yet to see evidence that he was all set to take the gig – only that he listened to the offer.
In any case, he didn’t take it. Neither did Tiger.
Greg did. Phil did. As did a bunch of others.
Each to his own.
Life goes on.
I want to say that turning LIV into the Let’s Go Brandon Tour is going to backfire bigly, but the more I think about it, the more that feels like a @SweetSummerChild take.

The idea Jack fucking Nicklaus turned down serious money is laughable if you know anything about him.
I by no means think Tiger is a great guy but major props to him here.
Yeah this is kinda my take. I just can’t believe Jack has any moral reasons for turning it down. They were all financial.
I wonder how “there” Jack is. There is subtle decline in old people that makes them susceptible to stuff. I saw it happen to my Dad fall prey to some internet stuff and TV junk (think Kevin Trudeau).
I think the problem is that the Let’s Go Brandon crowd probably hates golf (while loving NASCAR and football), so it might get a few guys to watch for a bit or come out once to see the spectacle, but it’s not going to attract long term crowds.
IME the exact opposite is true. A sport that has actively discriminated against minorities and women since it’s inception is right up their alley.
I fucking love golf but one of the main reasons I haven’t ever joined a private club is that I just don’t want to socialize with that group any more than I have to.
The country club Rs mostly just voted trump for the tax breaks, they would just as soon vote for desantis or any other generic R that won’t threaten to raise their taxes. They are a completely different species from the hardcore Let’s Go Brandon crowd that stormed the capitol.
Yes, completely different clientele. The country club crowd chuckles as they say “Let’s go Brandon” rather than screaming it like rabid animals.
You haven’t spent too much time at country clubs have you? The average Gen X or Boomer golfer is a huge part of Trump’s base. In 2016 one guy at the club I played at had a Hillary sign in his yard and it was all anyone talked about in my foursomes for a couple weeks.
Plus the country club MAGAs are the biggest group worried about cancel culture. They are worried their privileged position in their local communities could be damaged by one slip of what they really think to the wrong people.
It’s actually pretty savvy move by Norman but the product has to back it up. Concerts and stuff are nice but people are only going to tune in to the telecast if there is an expectation of tangible drama at the end of the tournament involving the best players in the world.
Just not my experience at all. The country club people where I grew up (Pittsburgh area) were very much racists who knew to keep from saying it out loud. They are pretty much fully bought in to Trump over RINOs and were the core of the Tea Party backlash in 2010 as well. And the whole cancel culture thing is probably their #1 issue because they feel they have something to lose by being cancelled.
Maybe it’s different at really rich places like Bel Air country club or Shinnecock but not at your average suburban private club
