Golf: No Bones, just Bonesaws

It’s both.

They get guarantees based on their contracts. Similar to appearance fees that some non-PGA Tour events pay.

And then they play for prize money–both individual and team.

But it seems that for some of the contracts at least, the up-front money is a guaranteed payday, but winnings are deducted against that amount. As others have said, likely not for the league’s stars or certainly not the entire amount, but possibly so for some of the lesser players.

Whoa, this is a big loss for the Tour if true. Future star in the making:

saw cameron and assumed you were just reporting the old cam smith news

Well, Tiger’s chances of getting sole possession of the all-time record for PGA Tour wins keeps improving. He needs one more and at this rate it might be him, JT, Rory, Scheffler, and the local club pros soon.

Exaggerating, but yeah, bad developments lately for those of us rooting against LIV.

Just so hard to believe some of these younger players care so little about winning majors and playing for history that they’d give that all up (or at least risk giving it up with their major eligibility status still unknown) for a huge upfront payday when they are destined to make tens of millions regardless.

Even I, with no hope of ever making the Tour, used to spend hours as a kid on the practice green pretending that “this putt is to win the Masters” and dreaming of Major glory.

What about if you’re already destined to win $50-100 mil over the next 30 years anyway and are already a multi-millionaire today?

There’s very little in my life I wouldn’t trade to have the experience of winning the Masters. Hard to believe a young guy justing breaking out on Tour who’s been dreaming of winning majors his whole life and is capable of doing so would trade all that for a quicker payday on a nascent tour, but here we are.

In any case, maybe this one was just a rumor, but there will certainly be others:

The Tour has a rich pension plan that pays millions to even middling players who are able to sustain lengthy careers, on top of their career earnings and sponsorship money.

Cameron Young may have missed cuts on the Korn Ferry tour but he also won on it twice. Anyone who follows golf can clearly see that barring injury this guy’s going to be a star.

And I disagree that the young golfers today couldn’t care less about playing in majors much less winning them. There may be a handful for whom that’s true, but you don’t grind it out on the range and course from sunup to sundown your entire childhood dreaming of nothing but dollar signs.

They are for the most part all rich, entitled white assholes so they assume there will be no real consequences to their actions. I bet most figure that they will be able to keep playing in majors while on LIV and that if LIV folds (or they choose to leave LIV) they can just go right back to PGA with no issues.

Moved CW derail to Poker New thread.

i just think you’re overestimating their ability to perform consistently over a long career. any golfer knows you can develop the yips out of nowhere, even them

Certainly some flame out, get injured, lose their swing, etc. Always a risk in sports. Which is why I certainly don’t blame any of them for going for the guaranteed cash.

My only real point was that potentially throwing away your major championship dreams seems like a steep price to pay, but the past few months have shown that there are many happy to pay that price.

While I wouldn’t say this is universally true, my sense is these days athletes are more prone to measure themselves on earnings than championships. Especially in team sports in the era of free agency/mobility.

Hard to stay voraciously hungry to put up dubs once that first $100,000,000 is in the bank.

Been watching the US Women’s AM a little this week. Chambers Bay is absolutely beautiful. They re-did the greens with different grass so they look like they roll much smoother than the US Open where DJ 3 putted from like 15’ to lose. I guess it’s not the best for spectators so I doubt it’ll ever get another chance to have one but it sure looks like it’d be hella fun to play.

Tony Finau appears to have solved golf:

Going to play TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course tomorrow. Hopefully I’ll have some noteworthy stories afterwards.

How many golf balls you bringing?

Well, considering I plan on going Tin Cup on 17, three boxes, lol. Honestly it will depend on whether we play the tournament tees or not. Those are a huge stretch for my distance (I average around 260-270 on my drives), but since we are there I kind of feel like we should play them, in which case I’ll probably need more balls. I usually bring two sleeves, but I’ll probably take a full box.

To each their own, but I’ve had plenty of miserable rounds playing the tips when I had no business doing it.

Even thinking about it realistically, if you want to replicate the same challenge as the pros…

If their drives go 300 and 9 iron goes 165

Your drives go 265 and 9 iron goes 150

Then a 450 yard hole for them is the same challenge as a 400 yard hole for you. It presents basically the same test.

Like I said, play it however you want to maximize your experience, but a slightly mis-hit drive meaning you’ve got a long iron into a hard as hell green is a quick way to have a really frustrating day.
