GOAT Movie Themes - Last Block of Round 2 posted

Yeah what happened here

All time ending scene where the theme makes it that much more badass

That being said Once Upon a Time in the West was never making a deep run. But maybe it could have done a round better.

I am pretty sure I saw this one entered as well but apparently it didnt make the list.

Surprisingly it’s actually narrowly winning right now. I swear there has to be a voter in there who bypassed the video and just assumed it was the awesome Man With the Harmonica track. I wish it was entered under Freebird rules so that it could enter under the superior song next round if it survived.

Flabbergasted that so few appreciate the haunting beauty of that theme. Totally ruined my afternoon muffins. I’d genuinely put it in my top 5. I now walk among you with dimmed eyes and a stagger.

Round 1, Block 2 Justifications

  • Ghostbusters vs. Men in Black-This is a close match up, but again I nominated Men in Black so it wins for me. My favorite part of the song is when the regular full drums are in with the nice play of the strings and bass. The end title highlights this a bit better but this one had higher views. Holy cancellation Batman for that Ghostbusters video. I was choosing against it just because of a single Chevy Chase appearance, but then they showed him twice making it even easier for me. And what the Falk was going on with the cameo choices?

  • Goldfinger vs. Stayin Alive-I really hate Bee Gees. Change all their songs to instrumentals and I probably wouldn’t. I wish I’d nominated my favorite Bond theme, Skyfall by Adele but oh well. Here’s my remaster of it in case you want to hear it. It will cleanse your palate from Bee Gees unless you’re into super goofy sounding voices.

  • Arthur vs. Il Postino-That is some of the best produced elevator music I have ever heard. I swear I could not hear the guitar in it at all. I’d like to hear his voice change with the mic switches. That was a strange video where the director must have been bored by looking at Christopher Cross’s giant melon and was like ‘Do we have any other footage?’. Il Postino is a delightful theme I’d much rather hear in an elevator and that’s why it wins for me.

  • Godzilla: King of the Monsters vs. Against All Odds-Bear McCreary is a great composer (not sure how much of this is adapted but it is great). The Walking Dead is one of my favorite genre themes and I can’t believe we forgot it in the TV draft. His arrangement in this track is elite and all an epic score sound should be. He really understands the impact of bass in a song. And then we have Against All Odds. NEXT!

  • The Godfather vs. Shaft-In a battle of 50+ year old themes, all I can say is sorry to LKJ, you got a bad draw (for me).

  • Casino Royale vs. Urban Cowboy-I can’t believe I listened to Looking for Love again. And that’s all I’m gonna say about that. Casino Royale is a top 10 Bond theme which made this even easier.

  • Once Upon a Time in the West vs. Vertigo-I saw it was maybe a mistake to nominate that version of Once Upon a Time in the West, but it was a much bigger mistake to draw Vertigo in this round. The Vertigo song literally sounds like what I think vertigo would sound like, so it will take it for me.

  • Deliverance vs. Modern Times-I forgot about this one so I’m adding it now. Deliverance is an iconic song in movie history and the Modern Times song doesn’t have that same feel even though I have seen that movie. A good song but not really iconic, in my opinion, vs. a song that almost everyone knows regardless of whether you’ve seen the movie (I have not). Deliverance gets my vote.

When I waited tables, I took a hostess I worked with to see a Vertigo revival. This girl was so hot, men and boys would just open-mouth gape when they came into the restaurant.

When we got to the theater, she wanted to see the sex-thriller Bound instead. But I, a complete fucking idiot, said “No, let’s stick to the plan.”

She fell asleep 10 minutes into Vertigo.

Fuck that movie. I think about this event enough as it is, I don’t need to be reminded.

these two are the same theme

Did I post something wrong or are you saying they sound the same? It’s early, sarcasm detector not booted up.

Ha. Sorry. Just that they sound the same.

8 Mile vs. Watchmen: Meh, for the first bit I thought Watchmen might have enough juice to get me to default its way as the instrumental option, but I ultimately couldn’t get into it that much. 8 Mile.

Lord of the Rings vs. Cinema Paradiso: Brutal draw for Cinema Paradiso, which I suspect might incorrectly lose to the (also very deserving of a bit of a run if it wasn’t against Cinema Paradiso) Lord of the Rings just because of the relative popularity of the films. I listened to both, and as great as the LOTR theme is, this isn’t too close for me. Paradiso gets my vote.

Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door vs. The Mission: The Mission is weaker Morricone for me, but I still tend to favor it in this matchup.

Forrest Gump vs. The Shining: Oh boy. Some of these matchups are unfair. I think both of these are excellent, and I think there’s an argument that the Gump theme does more to elevate the film, but the counterpoint is that this Shining theme is crucial to the single best opening credits I’ve ever seen, and that tone-setting goes a long way. Gotta vote Shining.

Last of the Mohicans vs. Bullitt: Last of the Mohicans score is a bit repetitive, but that note is strong enough to carry my vote here.

Officer and a Gentleman vs. Smokey and the Bandit: This saccharine Joe Cocker song is a guilty pleasure for me, but it doesn’t come particularly close to tempting me to vote for it against Eastbound and Down.

Rocky vs. The Man With the Movie Camera: This Man With the Movie Camera theme is really good. Unfortunately it was tossed into the building of a busy highway with a draw like this. Voting Rocky here, and I imagine most of the time until it dies.

Jaws vs. Quantum of Solace: Not really feeling this Bond song. Jaws is classic. Easy vote.
