She’d lose though. A progressive ran against Adams in the primary and got owned.

NYC’s voting base is mostly comprised of shitlibs and deplorables

i think she’s a far better candidate than any other politician, even a progressive one. and i’m not predicting it obv, but i do enjoy when she drops bombs like this.

You may be right but also, nobody really knew who Maya whoever was in a sea of candidates.

True but I think that’s also consistent with what @superuberbob is saying. The NYC political machine is heavily biased against real progressives. Even the “liberal” power base in NYC is overwhelmingly made up of the affluent professional class, NYT reading type of centrists. They like to discuss progressive policy at brunch, but they also are easily persuaded on things like taxes because Low Taxes Are Good For The Economy and a strong police force to Keep Their Neighborhoods Safe. It sucks, but anyone trying to really shake up NYC with progressive policy faces a lot of head winds.

Did anybody run to the left of de Blasio in 2013? Looking back at articles, they are littered with mentions of “liberal activist” and “progressive change” (the latter being his own campaign’s term). He certainly wasn’t the centrist establishment candidate - that was probable Quinn?

Maya Wiley lacked name recognition not because she was a progressive being held down by the NYC machine, but because she had no public profile in NYC prior to her running for mayor. To compare the fate of her campaign to what could be for AOC is apples and oranges.

An incumbent Adams aside, I think AOC would be the clear front-runner. And if it’s a rough few years in the city, then Adams’ incumbency would be a detriment. Who knows if it’s a job she wants, anyway. Although it certainly would have a greater impact than a D rep in a minority congress.
