End of Year / New Years Resolutions

Those last two I am already on. Ive never snacked much at night and when I get the urge now I generally just go to bed. I do wake up super hungry though. Im also eliminating all drinks sans water. Already have gotten through my caffeine detox which was tough

Yeah I think Iā€™m unusual in the morning thing - I literally feel sick if I eat too much in the AM.

But yeah logging also helps you identify gaps / best places to cut.

I my experience you will get the best long term results by not focusing on losing weight quickly. Keep track of what you eat and be happy with any weight loss week over week. Focus on what you eat and not on how much you exercise. Do try to increase fitness but not because it helps with weight loss as it does relatively little long term but for the other health benefits.
It takes a long time for your mind and body to accept less calories and if you reduce it slowly you are much more likely to keep it up then trying to live with serious calory deficts for a long time.

You are referring to CPAP? Unfortunately I am just a little overweight, 20 lbs or so, and I still need one. I wonder if the last 20 lbs would make any difference

There are certainly things that can require CPAP use other than being overweight, so I empathize with you, but mine is almost certainly weight based, as I never had a problem til I pushed north of 275. While its not guaranteed that dropping the weight will fix my apnea, my doctor is pretty hopeful it would

Oh also, I wasnt knocking CPAP. Its a godsend for people who need it, but I am physcially reliant on it at this point, to the point that I cant go camping or anywhere overnight sans electricity or a battery backup.

I hear ya dawg. Using a CPAP sucks but now Iā€™m reliant on it. I used to be a pretty big long distance hiker but now itā€™s essentially impossible. The battery packs are too heavy to carry.

I mean I could go, I wouldnā€™t die. But I would hardly get any sleep, and neither would anyone around me. All the bears within five miles would come see what the ruckus was

You might be able to do a combo of car camping and day hikes or renting a cabin that you could do day hikes out ofā€¦ but that sucks.

I had no resolutions last year. I just didnā€™t plan any and then it was a bit of a whirlwind starting in early February finding out I would need surgery soon and also taking care of a baby. Despite that, a few big things happened:

  • Aforementioned surgery and recovery
  • Got engaged
  • Dropped from 198# to 180# in the final 1/3rd of the year
  • Started running and ran over 75 miles over that same time frame
  • Somehow kept a 350 day Duolingo streak

I think a few things started to click after recovery, especially with having a child now. I realized that improving my health (physical and mental) to allow me to keep up with my kid as much as possible for the next 18 years is my biggest goal. And this is coming from someone who already prioritized health pretty highly over the last decade, just a different type of fitness.

Now, to make some 2024 resolutions:

  • Run 300 miles - I plan to run a 5k in March, so I should be putting in the weekly mileage to accomplish this number easily. Iā€™ll also be doing other workouts with kettlebells and bodyweight, as well as stretching but donā€™t plan to track them this year. Stretch goal of 400 miles.
  • Read 30 books - This should be pretty hard. I only finished 10 last year but I listened to a lot of podcasts while walking the dog.
  • Change jobs - I think this will be pretty hard. The job market seems pretty rough right now in my area of expertise, at least relative to the past 10 years when it was scorching hot. I think I interview pretty well but struggle with specific steps of the interview process and know Iā€™ll have to study for probably a good 30-40 hours just to get back into it. Iā€™m also likely in line for a promotion in our upcoming cycle, so I may be incentivized to stick around for a title bump before I start searching.
  • Save money for the wedding - This should be easy. Weā€™ve got an original number in mind and not getting married until 2025, so have plenty of time to save.
  • Continue learning Greek daily - Iā€™m going to call this easy as well. Iā€™ll stick with Duolingo as the ā€œcheckmarkā€ part of the goal, but I also want to learn some outside of the app since I donā€™t even write any Greek at this pointā€¦

Right, this is the worst of it. It wouldnt kill me, but I wouldnt sleep. I switched insurances recently and the new insurance demanded I do a new sleep study in order to get a new machine, but they would only pay for the at home study. So that meant two straight nights of sleeping without the machine, meaning I got probably less than an hour of REM sleep combined those two nights. And oh yeah, the test failed night one so I had to do three nights over the course of 4. I was so irritable that week. Fucking sucked. On my CPAP I have roughly 1 instance a night of apnea events. During my sleep study it was over 100 per night. Ludicrous that I had to do it at all. Ive been on the machine for years.

Last year I interviewed four people for my little channel. I also broke down two books from chapter to chapter. I would like to do another six interviews and six book breakdowns for 2024.

Iā€™m not sure what Iā€™m doing for fitness. Been doing bodyweight stuff and long dog walks since the pandemic started. Iā€™d like to get back into running, but I didnā€™t like the number at last weigh in. I visited the gym by our leasing office for the first time today, but after years as a gym nut, it now feels like entering a different world. I went there today telling myself I donā€™t need any hyooge workout, just getting the lay of the land.

302 after 9 days, took a couple off from getting outside due to waking up exhausted and prepping for and have a colonoscopy. Didnā€™t get the dip I was hoping for after finishing the prep but didnā€™t get the bounce I was afraid of after going a little crazy after a day of fasting so itā€™s a wash. Need to get out and walk again this afternoon.

Check your local Meet Ups, there are probably a few groups who do hikes.

Yeah but they start at 7 am. So damn early.

In Colorado the trail head parking is usually at least half full if not all full by 7amā€¦ :)

Goddamn motivated bastards
