I never read a Bond book. How would I know they changed the guns to fleshlights?
Whoâs Afraid of Mein Kampf?
As Hitler's infamous book enters the public domain, its history shows that censorship can't stop dangerous ideas.
Would slapping a disclaimer on these Dahl books be sufficient for you to grant that the new publications, while perhaps not being something you would buy or read yourself, is not an offense?
Also, itâs âbadâ because itâs so deeply weird and dystopic (and disrespectful to the artist and their art, but I gave up on that one).
Recall thatâs what started this as a heated discussion when it shouldnât have been. @cassette offered the preposterous idea of leaving up statues honoring confederate generals and slaveowners but removing the part of the plaque that said the dudes were totally rad. You said thatâs so preposterous that you canât imagine it in real life and we said MF WE KNOW.
Maybe you can think of a better parallel for Dahl expurgated than a portrait with facial hair and a saucy title added.
Or maybe you canât.
Would slapping a disclaimer on these Dahl books be sufficient for you to grant that the new publications, while perhaps not being something you would buy or read yourself, is not an offense?
I was thinking yeah, but any sufficiently detailed disclaimer would would ruin the point of the disclaimer, right?
I like the idea of footnotes if for nothing else to see the hilarity of explaining some of the hilarious edits.
For a higher stakes look into how this can all turn out, check out this review of Heidegger in Ruins. It details the great lengths Heideggerâs heirs and publishers went to rewrite and edit out Heideggerâs support for Nazi Germany before, during, and after WW2.
It took decades to unwind the changes, and even after all that work, most people donât know about the originals or how Heideggerâs philosophy is shot through with his racism.
what are you, pro Nazi???
Iâm not, that was the worst part of Mein Kampf tbh and I hope some sensitivity readers make some changes soon.
Many daily comic strips have continued on with other writers/artists after the original creator retired or died. Maybe this could be arranged with Dilbert? I realize that technically Adams has the copyright to the strip and characters, but it seems unfair that us Dilbert-heads have to pay the price for his missteps. Isnât there anything congress can do about this? I am still getting over the loss of Cathy, this one two punch may be too much to bear.
we need to make sure Mein Kampf is accessible to all!
Bond gave Madeleine a brotherly sisterly hug and then talked with Blofeld about their differences. And everybody lived happily ever after.
Response A: his heirs were just fulfilling his theory of the dialectic
Response B: the vast majority of people have never heard of Heidegger, so itâs not surprising they also donât know he was a Nazi

afaik itâs not on the banned book lists anywhere
As Hitler's infamous book enters the public domain, its history shows that censorship can't stop dangerous ideas.
I think itâs banned in the Netherlands and Germany.
Response B: the vast majority of people have never heard of Heidegger, so itâs not surprising they also donât know he was a Nazi
âMost peopleâ in my post = âmost people reading and studying him.â
That is surprising since I think being a Nazi it the first or second thing you would know about him
Oh okay, well donât try to read it there I guess.
Probably yes these days. 10 years ago, not at all.
Everyone was trying not to admit it prior to the publication of his Black Notebooks. And then after the publication the line changed to âheâs a Nazi, but his philosophy is not racist.â The new reading is now, âyeah the whole thing, in the original, is riddled with antisemitism and totalitarian endorsements.â
The only way to get to this final step, before Heidegger in Ruins and a couple others, was to be an academic looking at archives and shit. The published works are all Dahlâd to delete the worst bits.
I just hope Iâm alive long enough for the sensitivity readers to edit out the memory hole from 1984. I never was a fan of that part. I like the part where the rats fucked peoplesâ shit up though, that kicked ass.
