Yeah sure, but if you’re building limited access roads with limited routes and navigational aids for computers that get people from one walkable environment to another, you might as well throw down some rails and call it public transit.

Obviously all solutions should include maybe 100X the current spending to have ample, highly functional transit. But even even then if we are going to allow cars at all, something needs to be done about the current situation where cars swarm areas in a way that destroys their potential as walkable spaces. Honestly if you just walk around some nice mixed use neighborhoods there is absolutely a clear villain and it’s not the pedestrians and the bikes.
Perhaps the only thing Americans like more than guns is cars. Perhaps.

People are going to react more poorly to talking away those freedoms permanently than they did to being made to wear masks, which is why I’ve pushed the idea that you need a stronger government more capable of coercing good behavior from citizens if you want to address climate change meaningfully. Of course, climate change is an issue with one of the larger partisan divides, IIRC, so it’s going to take a lot of coercion.

I think they like cars more. Even more than guns, cars are a way to entrench privileged positions by making expensive neighborhoods designed for 2+ family cars and delivering absolutely terrible transit so poor people can have the shitty lives they deserve.
