I am genuinely curious as to what people think the term âbanana republicâ is supposed to mean. Most references I hear seem very odd.
âBanana Republicâ is generally meant as an insult to the ârepublicâ in question. Very victim blaming. John Foster Dulles was once an attorney for United Fruit and then helped instigate a coup against the government in Guatemala as the Secretary of State - oh, Guatemala is a âbanana republicâ. Eric Holder was a lawyer who represented United Fruit (name changed to Chiquita) and then supported a coup against Honduras and Honduras is a âbanana republicâ.

Yes, exactly. When people call the US a Banana Republic, who are they suggesting are pulling the strings - Russia? China? Israel? The Vatican? Very confusing imo.
