My main source of hope these days is that the things Trump is doing will be universally done by a dem administration. People say, “third term” blah, blah, blah,” but we see the public reaction to Trump through things like out-of-range special election results and failure to indict people by grand juries, etc. The US government cannot really be managed without popular support. Fact is, 75% of people with a bachelor’s degree think Trump is bad news, and these are the people who basically run everything. So, I expect much this Trump bullshit to end in 1 more year, and for a dem to be elected in 3 years, and then I expect [as in hope] that dem to go ham, acting like a dem-Trump until the GOP agrees to some constitutional amendments or what have you. I can’t wait until much of this shit is thrown back in the Supreme Court’s face.
The only real risk I see is if Dems lean into things like trans rights and land acknowledgments and other performative bullshit that most average people think is crazy, and then we get 4 more years of some version of Trumpism.
The Dems don’t lean into trans rights and, even if they opposed trans rights, the wildly insecure reactionary weaklings would still think they leaned into trans rights because they aren’t quite as proud of being cruel as the GOP is.
Know how you stop reckless authoritarian regimes? Join them when they beat up minority groups. First they come for the trans kids, you gotta be right there with a bat helping.
Maybe there’s new polling, but Harris won with college grads 54 to 44. That’s almost as big as the margin that Trump won white people with or that men preferred Trump by.
As flawed as USA’s system is, I think this is more a lesson in how bad faith actors can ruin pretty much any system if they desire to and can get elected to a position of power.
This my fantasy, but I don’t think it will be reality. I expect the next Dem administration to be meek and to “reinstate norms”, keep the DOJ at arms length, not fire everyone Trump hired, etc., and I expect the supreme court will continue to play calvinball and the next Dem administration will basically accept it.
Some of the checks and balances stuff was nice in theory, but USA has far too powerful of a President and a system that structurally really only allows for two parties. That has caused polarization for the sake of it, based on party, and corruption. And USA has not ranked well as a democracy for a long time.
The rankers used to basically give the USA a pass as the worst real democracy, but at this point USA is a “deficient democracy”.
Well this is supposed to be the rub, but looks like fooling large segments of the population is not that hard. People are dumb. Founders actually seemed to have a sense of this, but their solutions were lolbad such as they were.
