I sometimes wear weird sweaters, I guess making it pretty clear I’m not a Jacksonville native, one night someone asked me “what are you?” And I said I was Dutch. That seemed to satisfy him.

In Southern cities they’re friendly if you’re a tourist, but if they’ve seen you around for a while and think you’ve moved there, then they’re not so friendly
In for bashing the South! I’ll be in Savannah for a few days this week because that’s where my wife’s family is all from. Her aunt and uncle who live near Orlando are the family deplorables and I guess we’ll be spending some time with them but fortunately they’re the only Trumpy ones (that I know of), the rest of the family is actually alright. Not really looking forward to the trip other than 1-2 days in Disney with my kiddo but we’ll probably be spared the worst of “Southern Hospitality.”

In the South - they’re nice if you’re white. They’re probably also nice to well dressed adult minorities, but minority kids get treated with lots of suspicion. One of my best friends was black and while we lived n a very diverse city, but he definitely was treated quite different than me in certain situations.
Depends on what part of Jax, most of it is fine, but the western part is way more red necky. A bunch of the streets in downtown are still named after Confederate generals, too.

This is exactly what I noticed when I visited the south myself as an apparently reviled liberal New Yorker. People couldn’t have been friendlier in places like Nashville, Atlanta, NOLA, and Charleston.
You can definitely find deplorables in those places but the red state / blue state heuristic isn’t nearly as informative as thr urban / rural heuristic. Rural populations are very deplorable even in “liberal” states like NY and California.

Celebrated my dad’s 80th tonight with him and my stepmom and I’m ready to disappear. It’s been 4 years since his Alzheimer’s diagnosis and he’s days away from entering a memory care facility and my step-mom needs me, but she’s been mainlining Rush and his ilk since at least 1983 and whatever critical thinking skills she may have had are long gone. She nods along with Fox News, complains to me about reverse racism, rags on Fauci like he’s the devil incarnate, thinks she’s a CRT expert, that DJT is infallible and every accusation against him is complete bullshit, and tonight told me that fully developed viable babies are being taken from the womb after 9 months only to be disemboweled. And she’s mastered the art of non-stop talking and head shaking as you try to rebut whatever stupid ass fucking thing she just said, so of course I accepted her invitation to watch Gutfeld with her tonight. We got to talk about pronouns after that. She asked me how she was supposed to address someone who preferred they/them as if she was put out because she didn’t know how to handle it. I told her that I don’t give a single fuck about pronouns because I think people can decide that shit for themselves and I’ll refer to them however they want because it makes them feel comfortable and anyone who is butthurt over the issue is a fucking asshole. I used to just let her comments hang in the air uncomfortably but have been calling her bullshit lately and it’s depressing af. Hook, line, and sinker on every culture war issue and a wall of stupid between her and reality. Not sure if I should jeopardize my sanity trying to deprogram her. Maybe just snapping at her when she parrots that shit and telling her to stop spreading lies and then refusing to debate anything will get her to stfu about Fauci and Hunter.

Terrible to hear. And sorry about your father’s condition. My grandfather actually became a much kinder man (though we didn’t discuss politics) after his diagnosis. He had been a total right wing sociopath beforehand. Also a total know it all, post diagnosis he actually professed ignorance on a lot of things.

Thanks–I’m noticing the same trend with my dad and have been nothing but kind to him since the diagnosis and he absolutely appreciates it. My stepmom tells me that he says “I like him–he’s really nice” when my name pops up on their caller id. Stepmom is cool and fun when she’s not talking politics. Having that be off limits seems…acceptable.

That’s my favorite South Park episode. Gutfeld was a cesspool of misogyny and she felt the need to remind me that it’s comedy and they’re presenting two sides and we get to choose. I laughed at her and said something about them presenting 2-sides of a 300-sided die and maybe I choose option 298. I’ll seize control if she stats watching informative murder porn.

my brother-in-law is has completely drunk the “wolf/sheepdog” theory from noted insane person Chris Kyle (“American Sniper”) and tried convincing me and my wife that the Colorado Springs shooter is actually non-binary and that he’s not a dumb troll because how could someone serious enough to shoot up a place be insincere about his motives obviously???
We hopped into my mom’s car for a quick drive and the Fox News station was playing. When we commented on it she revealed that Ron DeSantis is “her boy”

I made it through 3 days in florida with zero political references or debates other than at one point I had to turn off some science video for my nephew because it mentioned the age of the earth - my sister’s fine with him learning about it (fundamental christian) but his dad isn’t.
pretty successful! also, they’re very anti-trump now. seems like everyone’s gonna move on to desantis
