I’ve been spending a lot of time in close proximity to a deplorable recently. He’s a pretty sharp guy, but he gets taken in by a lot of nonsense regarding undocumented people and BLM. Definitely conservative, flaky on trump, got his first shot three weeks ago.
We were talking this morning and he was wondering why we let “those people” burn cities down. Kept asking why someone doesn’t make them stop. I can’t engage with it because the premise is nonsense, but I do wonder what exactly he imagines that would look like. Mass arrests? Curfews and lock downs? Declaring war on your own citizens?
It’s just sort of weird to me that he feels comfortable advocating extreme violence in a work setting, and I really don’t like knowing what’s lurking just below the surface.

They want to see black people executed in public. It took me way too long to realize that yes, that is in fact what they want. They’re pretty explicit about it, actually.

If he was talking about, say, an ant infestation in his yard then it wouldn’t sound odd. And that’s the point. He’s being conditioned by Fox News and other conservatives to believe that that black people and immigrants and liberals are pests, not people.

No way you call his sources biased, mock him for being afraid of his own shadow, say that both sides need to come together to fix crime problems without violence, and say that if he really cared about x he would do y instead of z
Right, he just believes a bunch of nonsense and presents it as justification for carrying out mass violence on POC. If I was trying to change his mind, I’d probably laugh at him, pointing out that cities aren’t actually being burned down and there isn’t actually widespread looting. But I have to have a professional relationship with this guy, so I just rant about the worthlessness of Congress and state governments as well as about how the ultra wealthy are screwing over the rest of us.
Just got back from a weekend with the in-laws, who have unfortunately succumbed to the brain worms. They are regular folks living a pretty decent life in retirement in a rural but nice spot on a river.
While I was there I heard the n-word, and mostly how illegals were streaming over the boarder and taking all of our money, jobs, and are voting illegally. I heard how mask mandates are dumb, how the number of covid cases are hugely exaggerated, and how Joe Biden was an existential threat and is giving the country away to the Chinese.
10 years ago, they seemed like normal boomers. They are still mostly nice people who love their family, but are now just so bitter and unhappy. It makes me sad. My wife was in tears as we drove away this morning.
I certainly didn’t engage in any substantive way, other than to encourage them to think about how awful life must be to risk the lives of your children at a chance at living in America, and suggest that we should want everyone to have a better life. Was told that too many Americans need help first.
The lolsiest part is that they are literally less than a mile from the Canadian border, and suffice to say the chance of the caravan rolling through is uh, pretty small. They do have tons of white folk cooking meth tho!
Just super sad to see this play out. Obviously the deplorable sensibilities are distasteful, but it’s more so just seeing the darkness and perpetual bitterness taking hold that feels hopeless.

Trolling cp, where deplorables are free to their flag fly, has been eye-opening. These guys really do want to just set up machine gun nests at the border and execute children and they’re not even joking a little about it.

I sympathize with you, but these are pretty obviously awful people. Most deplorables are someone’s beloved Aunt Karen. Excusing scumbaggery because you know someone personally isn’t a good approach.

Life is complicated. They raised 5 good kids, are helpful neighbors, volunteer with various charities. Their outward actions are those of decent community members, but their inward thoughts have become corrupted. I guess we are all shades of grey when it comes to good and bad, few are all light and few are all dark. Just brutal stuff to watch the light snuffed out over such a relatively short period of time.

Meh. Massive racists are often very nice to other white people. I don’t know how many nice points are customarily awarded for that, but in my book it’s not many at all.
