Dealing with Deplorable Family and Friends

Going for the slow burn.

Yah, prolly lots more trolling before we get there.

nah I’m gonna call it right now, and it’s gonna freak you out:

“I’m sorry where was your concern when PANTIFA/BLM THUGS and CRIMINALS looted and destroyed police stations and burned and looted the property of GOOD AMERICAN SMALL BUSINESSES?”

Sounds about right. Don’t forget they also destroyed Portland and several other cities.

Saw it already. It is white supremacist douchebags that caused it. sup?

My mother is retiring this year. She’s looking to move to Florida with her partner.

Guess the first place they’re looking at there.

Come on @Riverman. You of all people should know the answer to this one given your posts here.

Not sure why it took so long.

The personality of my mother’s partner is pretty much identical to Chapo’s description of the small business tyrant. Main difference is that his approach to covid is more in line with the people posting here despite his overall deplorableness.

My mother is less like the villagers but I’m sure social pressure will make her one of them.

I don’t check this thread often.

But victor’s explanation makes sense. Plenty of people could have seen it and thought it was just a rhetorical question.

I think my parents live in the California equivalent of The Villages. However, as Trumpers they are probably in the minority or at best an even standoff - our highly technical yard sign survey back in October was close to 50:50 but seems like a lot of their friends are more liberal minded.

How many of those friends are liberal on social issues and immigration, but more conservative on fiscal issues. How many signs did you see supporting a yes vote on Proposition 15 (increased property taxes) or no on 22 (Uber/Lyft)?

I saw zero signs on propositions but I’d imagine your assessment is likely correct, although when I say ‘liberal’ I do in fact mean vote for Democrats and not Republicans.

Talked to my mom on the phone yesterday and I was glad that she was talking happily about getting her and my dad signed up for their vaccine shots. At least some of the dumbest stuff out there hasn’t gotten to them.

I’m awfully curious to know their thoughts on Biden, since he seems like about the most acceptable Democrat that they could have to deal with having as President. (Still not curious enough to actually broach the subject.)

I’ve never explicitly asked my parents if they voted for Trump. I’d rather not know for certain. I see it as an extension of the informal don’t ask/don’t tell policy, where they don’t explicitly ask me if I like smoking weed and taking mind altering substances.

I’ve taken a similar stance, except that I feel enough certainty about that reality that I’m not suspending disbelief really at all.

However, historically they did show an ability to grow weary of Bush and to openly say that he wasn’t doing a very good job by the end. Based on how I remember that going, it’s at least in the realm of possibility that they’ve soured on Trump (though I’m sure they both voted for him twice). It’s the most I can realistically hope for. They’re not going to stop voting Republican regardless.

Not my family, but here’s a fun thread:

Omg. Worth the read. I am so grateful that I don’t have any immediate family members like this.

Oh man this delivers way more than I expected.
