Something my dumb self has been kicking around as I’ve started to see more family and friends vaccinated. There definitely is a ton of variance between people who have had strong reactions vs. those that barely felt a thing on shot 2. Thought that it was mostly a young vs. old thing, but I’m starting to wonder. Hearing stories of people who wake up in the middle of the night and get clobbered and it made me consider if those with super strong reactions to the vaccine might be those that would get the worst of an actual COVID-19 infection?

Zerohedge has gone full antivax apparently. Their post isn’t even that bad, but based on the comments - holy cow - they’re pandering to their loony antivax base and they know it.
If you read the actual article from CBC - only 2 staff members and 10 residents tested positive. Some hadn’t even had their second shot yet, and none got very sick.
Just got the email from the state health dept saying I am eligible for the first jab. Has a link to click to sign up that generates about 100 locations. None of them have any openings. Looks like I’ll be doing some online sniping to try and catch an open slot somewhere.

Booked my vaccine appt for Friday.
Also found out my one roommate who has been YOLOing for the last year because staying home isn’t fun decided to just bullshit her way into getting a shot yesterday. She brought an old pay stub from the restaurant we worked at and when called out on it lied and said she just got rehired. Just the shittiest “nice” person I’ve ever met in my entire life.

Where are they actually requiring this kind of proof? I thought pretty much every state was working on the honor system as far as vaccine eligibility is concerned.
I’m not sure where she got the shot. I was told the story from another roommate. But yeah I’m surprised somebody actually checked the dates on the pay stub and saw it was several months old but then was somehow ok with her just saying “oh ya I just got rehired and don’t have a current pay stub” as verification.
Got jab 1 today. A nice birthday present.

Pennsylvania access continues to suck. No coherent system. Location by location hunt and peck.
NY opens it up to 60+ today. Next week NY opens it up to basically all public facing workers. We’re getting there.
Pro tip: Don’t allow yourself to start thinking about getting the vaccine or you will start to get really antsy about getting your vaccine.

Seems that the president of the Czech Republic is throwing a Trumpian fit because the Minister of Health refuses to allow the use of Sputnik vaccine without approval from the European Medicines Agency. Now, he wants the Prime Minister to fire the Health Minister because the Health Minister refuses to resign on his own.
It’s not the first time people tried to force him out. The reason it didn’t work last time is that nobody wants the damn job because it’s a thankless one where politics rules over science and results in character assassination if the medical expert doesn’t get in line with the party’s desires.
No fucking wonder why this country is the most infected one in the world.
In positive news, I get shot #1 tomorrow afternoon.

Health systems in most of Brazil’s largest cities are close to collapse because of Covid-19 cases, its leading health institute warns.
More than 80% of intensive care unit beds are occupied in the capitals of 25 of Brazil’s 27 states, Fiocruz said.
Experts warn that the highly contagious variant in Brazil may have knock-on effects in the region and beyond.
“Brazil is a threat to humanity,” Fiocruz epidemiologist Jesem Orellana told AFP news agency.
What do we know about the Brazil variant?
Preliminary data from the University of São Paulo, Imperial College London and Oxford University suggests the P1 variant could be up to twice as transmittable as the original version of the virus.
It also suggests that the new variant could evade immunity built up by having had the original version of Covid. The chance of reinfection is put at between 25% and 60%.
