Have spent the afternoon hitting up doctors I know in the Philippines. Every hospital is full. People are being turned away and dying at home.
Rugby, that’s rough. We know the Duterte is part of the club with Trump and Bolsonaro. Clearly he is responsible for what must be a terrible government response there.
Do we know anything about the veracity of Philippine stats?
Population is about 107M so x3 to compare to USA. So equivalent 8,000 be 170,000 total deaths and 12,000/day cases vs peak US at 70,000.
Most disturbing is the Death curve trend line. It’s been a steady exponential with only a mild early summer slowdown.

An Illinois Prof was on cable news this morning talking about their spit test and then Dr Haseltine was on a different segment talking about an in-home test similar to a pregnancy test.
Apologies as I wasn’t watching very closely.
It’s just fucking nuts that so many schools are making stupid decisions that are going to result in sickness and death. Universities are supposed to be full of smart people and are supposed to be able to make smart decisions. I’ve definitely been jaded in the past seeing things like nepotism and organizational politic-ing result in unqualified people being promoted into decision making roles, but this is just something else. The hit these schools will take to their reputation won’t go away, I don’t see how this ends well for them.
There are lots of faculty working at these schools who are utterly perplexed at the decision making, yet have no power to do anything about it.
