So many people are going to take vacations from closed states to open states that it’s all going to be totally fucked.
One angle of this that we haven’t discussed regarding the politics is that some red state governors may decide that it’s better to race to herd immunity than to try to stay below hospital capacity.
For example, let’s say the doubling time in active cases is one week.
Arizona currently has about 17K official cases active. 996 deaths out of 22-23K cases, which indicates that they’re undercounting by at least a factor of four. Let’s assume most undercounting was earlier, and they currently have 2.5 times the official cases.
That’s 42,500 active cases. Okay, and we’re assuming they’ve had about 90K total cases. The population is 7.2M and they need somewhere around 5M cases for herd immunity, if it’s a thing, which obviously they think it is.
They’re currently nearing capacity, cranking out like 1,400 new cases per day. Assume that’s really lik 3,500 a day. If they maintained this rate and managed to not go through their capacity, they’d need 1,402 days to get to herd immunity.
On the other hand, if they just let it rip…
42.5K active cases today with a 7-day doubling time means:
6/14: 85K
6/21: 170K
6/28: 340K
7/5: 680K
7/12: 1.4M
7/19: 2.8M
7/26: 5.6M and herd immunity reached.
Now, obviously people would get pretty scared when they started sending out the bring out your dead wagons in July, and the doubling time would slow down… but the general point is that these politicians may be deciding that their best chance of being re-elected is to get this thing over with in July and give people 3+ months to forget about it before they vote. Ducey is term-limited out and this term runs til 2022, so he’s not running for public office again until '22 or '24. He may think he can get this stench off of himself by then, especially if he blames it on all the liberal Black Lives Matter protesters.
They may be willing to trade more deaths for a shorter duration. This is a MM-style gambling event taking place, because herd immunity is not a sure thing, and even if it is the immunity may only last a few months, so they may not even be covered through next cold and flu season.
I thought of the comparison when typing that lol… Note I’m not advocating for incrementally fixing it, I’d love to snap my fingers tomorrow and overhaul all the stuff I think we should overhaul. But I’ll be over in the other thread this week to discuss that stuff.

There has apparently been a huge run on home gym equipment because of COVID. Even if he wanted to buy them everyone is cleaned out. I’m pretty sure I could sell my 7 year old home gym equipment for more than what I paid for it right now.
There is a dude on 22 so desperate that he is made himself plates out of poured concrete and built a rack out of 2x4s. Only thing he bought was a bar which took forever to get.
If you watch the reddit home gym stock thread and are diligent you can get stuff. I did this weekend. You need to be at the computer a lot though and ready to instantly purchase. I had stuff in the cart a few times that was gone before I could pay.
New York undoubtedly has done it right and the end results are really impressive. Longer than most harcore lockdowns is what we all should have done plus develop tracing routines/personel.
The downside for New York is as soon as they reopen they will be descended upon by infected dipshits who can’t miss out on seeing CATS for the 3rd time.

Over 400k global dead within the last six months. I saw that number and feel overwhelmed.
Hit 2m confirmed cases in the USA also. Makes you wonder, if a pandemic happens while no one cares does it make a sound?

It blows my fucking mind how many non-boomers i see at the grocery store without a mask on. Tbh, it perfectly sums up USA#1 mentality. “I could do this mildly inconveniencing thing that drastically reduces asymptomatic spread and is a huge net positive on public health. Nah. Lol fuck you thats why”.
