There will be questions for each charge, so if not guilty on all you can just go through each charge and select not guilty. If guilty only on some it takes time to make sure you get it righ
My recollection is that if you choose not guilty for a charge you don’t answer any of the sub-questions.
What crap is this? Judge was about to excuse and they said “nah, we have a verdict. Let us finish”?

Seems to be exactly what happened. I don’t think the judge told the jury he was about to excuse them; rather, he told the court (attorneys, defendant, gallery, etc.) that he was going to. And then they got the note that there was a verdict.
