A reminder ā Fairleigh Dickinson is outside the top 300 in KenPom, came in third place in the worst conference in the country and only made the tournament because Merrimack was ineligible.
Merrimack, however, could not compete in this yearās Big Dance because of an NCAA rule that bans the program from the postseason while it completes its four-year transition from Division II.

okay FDU over Purdue is the worst Iāve seen. Norfolk State Missouri I thought was the biggest I had seen, but this beats that.
Purdue shouldāve been the first one seed to lose anyway; western carolina mightāve even been the better team in that 1 vs 16 in 1996.
Princeton vs. Georgetown in 1988 was one of the best games I ever saw. Princeton came a last minute Alonzo Mourning blocked shot from winning.
Not UMBC? They didnāt just beat UVA, they fucking crushed them.
UMBC wasnāt nearly as bad as FDU. Plus UVA had lost DeāAndre Hunter before the tournament started.
UMBC only had 10 losses going into the tournament. FDU had 12 losses in Quad 4 alone. They lost to Hartford, who only had one other D1 win all year. They are only in the tournament on a technicality. They ranked 68th on the seed list, worse than that Texas Southern team that lost 20 games.
I know UVA was the #1 overall seed and margin of victory does count for something, but Iāve got this one as way more shocking because of just how bad FDU was this season.

Iām talking more about the game itself. Purdue was a bigger favorite than UVA, but UMBC beat the spread by a lot more, Iām sure. It was a complete destruction. If an alien was watching that game, they would have thought UMBC was the #1 seed. It was that bad.

A one seed losing a tight game is understandable. Shooting variance and whatnot.
Getting blown out as a one seed by a sixteen puts UVA basketball on the very top top top of Embarrassment Mountain.
