Managed to secure a barely used rocket appartamento and a eureka mignon zero for 1300$ for the also new summer house in Norway! The tiny town its in have zero good espresso and its been a real struggle on our last few trips. Going for 6 weeks starting next Thursday. Not staying in my parents ADU and having good coffee will be an absolute game changer.!
Also ordered a few bags of beans from tim wendelboe in Oslo. Pretty sure that was also from someone rec in this thread. Rmemeber one of the beans i got last time were absolutely amazing.
Correct. My father in law was using it this week and he said it was breaking down in some way (I wasnāt really paying attention to what exactly the problem was) and that we should think about replacing it. It is roughly 15 yrs old, but not heavily used.
Thatās a good question. They downsized about 5 yrs ago and we havenāt visited them since, mainly because itās so much more convenient for them to come here.
If I remember correctly, I think they have a similar set up (one machine grinds and brews). I know when we used to more frequently (10+ yrs ago) they had a separate grinder and coffee maker.
Alright thatās what I wanted to know (that they were grinding at home). So yeah,
thatās going to be the best value grinder for this, but then Iām not sure you can keep the total cost at $300. Thereās the small Bonavita 5-cup for $149. The larger 8-cup is $179. At that point youāre getting close to a refurb Moccamaster ($229). So thatās a range of options from $299 to $379 pretax. None of these have electronics. If your guests have to have a timer then I like @freddbirdās suggestion.
That sounds great. Iām not that inflexible on cost. $600 seemed a bit steep.
The more I research it, the more I like that Keurig suggestion. I didnāt know that there were reusable pods that allowed you to brew your own coffee.
Iām not here to sunshine pump the K-word, but figuring out how to make drinkable pod coffee gives you a ton of flexibility. I have the stainless version of this brand linked below. Preferably with filters. You have to select a pod thatās compatible with whatever machine you have.
I had a Costa Rica microlot recently with a prominent candied grape note, and even a week after grinding I was able to extract it from a pod on a cheap one-stream hotel K machine. Definitely better than anything I could have gotten from a non specialty shop, and my full travel setup is contained within one medium ziplock bag.
Yeah nice deal if you go with a traditional coffee maker. The KB model with glass carafe is even a few bucks cheaper.
Personally, Iāll never own another metal carafe but ymmv. These are simple devices with no timers / electronics, but I donāt see why they couldnāt be operated on a schedule by a smart plug or w/e.
Yeah, we get like a 2 sentence review of half the coffee shops in Salt Lake City or whatever and nothing for this? I feel cheated. This is like the one coffee place I might actually ever go to.
oh it was everything I imagined (Iāve been here once before but it was during covid, everything was to-go only, I got a pour-over in a paper cup and drank it outside). I didnāt talk to jack very much, even though it was mid-afternoon he had a line, I was actually pretty thankful to get a seat. Just watching him work was pretty exciting; he is absolutely locked in. I was hoping to make it in time for ārare espresso mondayā but a delay out of salt lake city meant they were out of whatever that was before I got there. The shot I got was an ethiopian roasted by Sey, it was completely great though honestly I wasnāt really paying as much attention to the coffee as the activity behind the bar.

I was hoping to go again thursday morning before flying out, but I ended up needing to take the redeye home wednesday night
