I guess that’s pretty scandalous. I assume the worst part is letting it become public.
A much less high-up guy was photographed walking around with his mistress (her dress went viral) and lost his job.
Obviously no one knows what’s going on in the private lives of people at the top of the party, but Xi’s regime is very sensitive about the issue of infidelity among party officials.
Wow. I guess I have a lot to learn about China. I’m told Caesar Augustus tried to regulate morality in the early Roman empire but it mostly didn’t work. He did end up forcing his daughter into exile when he found out about her doings though. It probably didn’t help that everybody else knew. It must be kind of like that.
Money and power both make a good run at it, but sex remains undefeated.
Code Pink has been down the Greyzone path for awhile.

Your avg Joe in the US is always going to be late to pick up on foreign affairs with something like China’s economy but its pretty hardcore if you take a look at whats going on there.
Went to a second division soccer match in Suzhou last night. Away team scored fairly early and a fight among players ensued. I didn’t see what sparked it.
Supporters section at the 50 yard line adjacent to 95% of the people in attendance spent 80% of the rest of the match chanting “shabi, cao ni ma” nonstop, directed at a single away player. Effectively “asshole, fuck your mom”. When he scored a goal to make it 2-0 it was a beautiful moment.
Felt bad for the parents and grandparents who brought kids obv, but like, goddamn, zero creativity in insults.
Euros aren’t the only weirdos when it comes to soccer I guess.
Chinese fans are pretty ruthless
Come to think of it the players are too. Here’s how basketball diplomacy went as a reminder.
Wtf is China doing? https://edition.cnn.com/2023/09/26/asia/philippines-south-china-sea-floating-barrier-removed-intl-hnk/index.html
Playing the old game of countering domestic issues with an aggressive foreign agenda?
China’s been doing stuff like that for ages. They also claim that part of Vietnam is also Chinese territory based on some dubious map from the 1940s.
Everybody:
Gavin Newsom: Just wanted to make sure I go out of my way and emphasize our [sic] opposition to Taiwan independence."
You can tell cars are old hat in China now because people aren’t cleaning them early in the morning with feather dusters anymore.
Okay, not all car owners did but it was kinda nuts for me to see it as not just a one-off when I lived in Fuzhou.
Have you studied Xi Thought today?
This also translates to “Have you studied today?”
The character for Xi is the same as the second character for study (that can be left out). The other propaganda in the metro station directly references Xi which has been the norm since he removed term limits.
I’m in Wuhan.
Today outside the local shopping area saw an elderly couple begging. Woman under a blanket, man on his knees bowing. They had a QR code for accepting payment.
Ten years ago this was pretty common (minus the QR code). Since I’ve been back in China (and even 2015-19 perhaps) you just don’t see it in the big cities. I’ve heard it said that beggars were all sent back to their hometowns or institutionalized, but I don’t have any direct knowledge about it.
Also a guy on a motorbike approached me today at that area and asked if I’m from Xinjiang. Same thing happened about a hundred feet away last week. Weird.
FWIW it’s typically guessed that I’m Russian.
Chinese propagandists, particularly regarding ethnic minorities, just can’t help but tell on themselves.
Guess who the Han (dominant ethnicity) kid is?
Hint: the only one not wearing a folk outfit.
