that’s classical, results happen a lot more in rapid/blitz

Magnus showed up 2 minutes and 30 seconds into his first round match

Still won

Imagine having a 3:00 - 0:30 time advantage vs Magnus…and promptly using it to spend 90 seconds on your first 7 moves.

Yeah, I mean WTF was that? It looked like a fairly standard opening and he seemed to spend over a min on the the ~6th move.

He was tanking to even the time. He didn’t want to start Magnus’s clock and was made to by the arbiter.

I thought about that, but he didn’t take it all the way down to 30s either. It seemed like a weird half-measure.

I wonder if I could time out Magnus in 3m vs 30s. No chance online but live has to be like 60 moves a human can make in 30s, I’m not sure. If it’s closer to 40 moves then I’d think like a 2kish blitz player has a shot.

No, a 2k has zero chance even live. Probably need to be a 2300-2400 to even begin to have a chance

Yeah, zero chance for a 2K.

He’d have to avoid getting into completely won but high move count positions, and it’s not that hard to get max level stockfish to a 20+ move game before there’s an imminent mate. How long does it take to irl physically march a pawn down the board and then mate a central king with k&q, that has to take a decent chunk of time. But I have no experience with live clock play and how adept people can get at it.

In that game there was an increment added with every move so mating in that scenario wouldn’t be a problem.

Yeah, if there’s any increment 0 chance for sure.

I didn’t realize there was one until I watched the vid. I was expecting a much greater feat than what it ended up being (especially since opponent burned a ton of clock at the beginning, probably on purpose).

Allegedly Mittens is so popular that it’s crashing chesscom’s servers.

I still have a hard time beating Martin consistently :frowning:

I play the bots when I am kind of distractedly playing on my phone while watching hockey. I have made it all the way up to Isla! Haven’t beaten her yet though.

I am not very good at chess but I have been playing a lot. I started playing classical games which improved my game a lot because you actually have time to think about things. I can’t calculate or visualize fast enough to really “play chess” in a blitz game.

Just been tooling around with the AI cats there. Are their Elo ratings actually accurate? I played AngryCat (1000 Elo) and it blundered its queen on the 7th move. No way do 1000 Elo human players play that poorly these days, right? I mean I haven’t played chess in 20 years and I wouldn’t have done something that stupid. I normally don’t blunder pieces until the endgame.

they do, im probably around 1700-1800 and blunder my queen all the time.

When he says “blunder”, I assume he means “leaves it hanging”. You don’t do that all the time, do you?

Yeah that’s what I was referring to. Just left the queen wide open for me to take it without any sacrifice super early in the game.

Suppose blunder has a wider definition than that
