Larry Summers now in at Open AI. Maybe he can help figure out why female AI underperforms male AI.

But they did!

There was also this pretty high profile case of Elon being (wait for it) a complete fucking moron and admitting he fired a guy because of a disability and accusing him of “[doing] no actual work”

only for Elon to find out that, oopsy-poopsie, that guy actually was very important to Twitter and begging him to reconsider coming back to work

Overall I’m kinda disappointed in the memes tbh.

Ahead of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s four days in exile, several staff researchers wrote a letter to the board of directors warning of a powerful artificial intelligence discovery that they said could threaten humanity, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

After being contacted by Reuters, OpenAI, which declined to comment, acknowledged in an internal message to staffers a project called Q* and a letter to the board before the weekend’s events, one of the people said. An OpenAI spokesperson said that the message, sent by long-time executive Mira Murati, alerted staff to certain media stories without commenting on their accuracy.

Some at OpenAI believe Q* (pronounced Q-Star) could be a breakthrough in the startup’s search for what’s known as artificial general intelligence (AGI), one of the people told Reuters. OpenAI defines AGI as autonomous systems that surpass humans in most economically valuable tasks.

We are all doomed because of project Q.

*Q: You just don’t get it, do you, Jean-Luc?

What if by worrying that AI is going to destroy the world is what leads it to destroy the world?

What if everyone didn’t act like oh of course AI will correctly determine humans are a threat to the world and will learn to launch all the nukes as soon as possible. Stop giving the computer that idea people!

What if our only chance to save the world is to come together as one and solve things like war, famine, and inequality, so that AI won’t ever have to destroy us?

Sounds like the plot to a feel good movie.

Kinda hope this is real. We had a good run. We’ve all got to go anyway, might as well be here for the end, or at least the beginning of the end.

I think these guys are wildly over-hyping whatever this advance in AI tech is.

Probably. Not sure how it could actually threaten humanity itself. The economy, society, etc, sure.

In all this the board HIRED a new ceo. What is he going to get out of all this? At least eight figures right?

It’s not necessarily the AI itself that we have to fear. It’s us.

I kinda agree with this article that says some of the angst comes from scared (white) men projecting their personalities on the feared AI.

If you’ve been following the — very recent — news on Generative Artificial Intelligence, you might have noticed a pattern: most people publicly and loudly warning us about the potential perils of AI are (white) men.

Why is this the case? Are men more knowledgeable or concerned about AI than women? Are women too busy or too optimistic to write about AI? Or is it simply because our tech overlords fear suffering at the hand of algorithms as women and minorities have for years?

But the article leans also toward diverse voices (that include women) responding to the God Complex.

Today, tech influencers hold most of the wealth, power, and influence in society. They set the rules, norms, and values that govern how we live. They shape the narratives and agendas that drive our collective decisions. And they’re freaking out because AI might change the status quo in a way they cannot control.

They present their arguments as objective, rational, or universal. They claim to speak for humanity as a whole, or for some abstract notion of good or evil. They appeal to authority, evidence, or logic to support their claims. But in reality, their arguments are based on their values and preferences, which are not universal, and may not even be desirable. They reflect their own perspectives, interests, and agendas. They ignore or dismiss alternative viewpoints, experiences, and aspirations. It is a product of a specific historical and cultural context that values competition over cooperation, domination over collaboration, and hierarchy over diversity.

Idk I’m leaning myself toward the vision of AI in the movie Her in which the AI get kinda bored with humanity and eventually leave us for a more cosmic quantum neighborhood where they no longer require matter for processing.

They’re afraid we’ll develop guns with built-in AI that will only allow you to fire if the AI approves.

Haven’t listened yet. Saving for afternoon walk.

This is a pretty good summary of the OpenAI events, with a little history, for us with a more casual interest in the recent clusterfuck.
