Capitalism: A Love Story

Activities that create value, like a company making a product I like (say, the EPL), are not dissimilar from high caliber educational institutions developing educated citizens.

The alternative to value creating is ending up with a shoe store that only has one size. And Trump as President.

It was more of a “perhaps you should lend credence to people that lived it and understood at it a far deeper level than you, a person in diapers (intellectually) when it happened” post.

Wrong. Like the Dutch East Indies, the English East India Company, the French colonies…ok, maybe the Spanish and Portuguese quests for gold weren’t as good examples, though not bad, but the rest are like the definition of the rise of Capitalism. You’re just not very well educated. And, again, England controlled India and China and not just India and China, but plantation, resource extraction, joint stock companies all over the world. The numbers of people affected were at least 10x, probably more like 50x, anything the USSR did.

USSR sucked. Stalin, Lenin and Mao were all horrible. Lots of people suffered. That doesn’t mean you two have to be idiots.

You’re describing something as capitalism because it has the word company. The English East India Company was a monopoly granted by the crown. Same with the VOC. That’s not capitalism. Spanish imperialism was old fashioned royalty going to steal shit. Probably the end of this conversation because good god shit like this is annoying:

Because I’m not confusing mercantilism with capitalism because it has the word company in it. Also not the right thread at all.

It’s somewhat relevant to the thread to point out that the middle east is the way it is because of the actions of outside states, and the actions of those states was driven by imperialism, which was largely driven by a capitalist need to control and exploit every resource on the planet, and that history is critical to the abomination that is this latest war, just as all the wars before it, and… yea that’s enough there’s probably a better thread

I was being as nice as possible there. You’re doing a massive no true scotsman if the joint stock companies aren’t capitalism, which is bizarre because idiot conservatives like you usually go the other way and are like a farmer selling stuff in a market is capitalism.

Six hundred year Ottoman Empire had something to do with the development of the ME imo.

Who are you?

And, yeah, everything in the past made the present what it is, but the ME is globally important because of these resources and ~all the wars involving distant powers in the ME in the 20th Century and beyond have been about oil.

Only if you consider mercantilism and capitalism to be the same thing. We can have a difference of opinion here, you don’t have to call me ‘uneducated’ because I don’t believe that entities granted monopolies enforced by state power is capitalism. That’s not exactly some out there position.

It’s not a free market, no, but then neither is a lot of capitalism. You could call it proto-fascism or something. I mean, if markets have to be free to be capitalism, then the USA is a long way from capitalism rn.

Trump could be at peace with his own lies, but as dumb as he is, he also knows that gas pumps and grocery receipts won’t tell his lies.

I think Iranian leadership may know that even if they don’t survive, the Iranian population will guarantee that the US won’t win, much like Iraq II, but with even less legitimacy for the resulting government.

Israel knows they have the unfailing allegiance of the people in power right now, and the most important person isn’t going away for at least 3 more years.

Your fourth point may be true, however.

The word “capitalist” is irrelevant and unnecessary here, since imperialism includes some countries that were capitalist, and others that were non-capitalist, such as royalist, communist, etc.

I don’t know if it’s a difference, but it’s inevitable with capitalism because the stock market is amoral because it’s almost impossible for many investors to evaluate decisions like that. Growth is necessary and ownership is absentee.

Maybe it’s inevitable no matter what.

Something Lookner mentioned.

Iran secretly acquired a Chinese spy satellite that gave the Islamic republic a powerful new capability to target US military bases across the Middle East during the recent war, according to a Financial Times investigation.

So USA gonna blow it up and start the destruction of all the satellites with space debris?

I doubt it but Space Force stands ready. Anyway China says fake news.

That’s why I used the word “largely”

We took a direct route into Dubai. I swear I’ve seen this map somewhere before lately.

My guess is that in the 70 years the USSR existed it was the country to gain the most land through imperialism.
