Really? I haven’t heard about Mormons engaging in Scientology-style lawsuits.
cancel culture isn’t real. its a boogeyman made up so that people spend inordinate amounts of time bitching about something that doesnt matter. we live in the most open and anonymous time in history thanks to the internet and social media, anyone can get online and say whatever the fuck they want and have it have the potential to reach millions.
but that also means that people who have chosen to be public figures and use that fame or attempt at fame to increase their brand/build a persona/ attempt to capitalize on social media can damage their image by saying racist/bigoted/stupid shit. it isn’t anyone’s fault but their own. if they had the absolute need to say that shit on the internet then they could have used an anonymous account, but they didn’t because they wanted that fame attached. i have absolutely zero sympathy for someone that says some shit that people dont like and then they respond with taking their dollars/views/follows elsewhere.
Yep, this is my post from 22
Who is that letter addressing? There is no manager of cancel culture that you can complain to. It’s an emergent phenomenon. It just happens spontaneously, there is no guiding force directing it that has levers we can control. Even if we all agreed cancel culture was the worst thing ever we couldn’t prevent it, even if we all agreed it was the best thing ever we couldn’t make it happen more often. It is a natural result of the social dynamics of a non material social environment. It’s idiotic to argue about the merits of something we have no control over.
I do note the irony of complaining about complaining about a thing you have no control over when you have no control over it.
From skimming her wiki page a couple of days ago I don’t even think she was cancelled. People voiced concerns about her past and instead of rubber stamping her entry into this club or whatever because of who recommended her they said they wanted to review her acceptance and she got mad they were doing that so she withdrew lol. It seems like she didn’t even get officially cancelled unless I am not remembering correctly or misread
Does the fear of being canceled keep good people from stepping up to help or lead? That’s my fear.
What if there’s a brilliant thinker out there who made some mistakes in their past, thus is at a high risk of getting “canceled”…so they never come forward with their ideas, etc? My issue is, the cancel mob seems to think that not only are people canceled, but their good ideas or works are canceled right along with them, which is ridiculous to me.
Should there be a statute of limitations on canceling? Christian Picciolini is a reformed white supremacist, I tend to wonder if the cancel mob would give him that chance now. Just an example. My concerns are obviously more to do with cancellation based on past misdeeds, not going full Karen on video last week.
Some of the usually good posters have been very bad in this thread.
“Cancel culture”, which just means assigning some sort of responsibility for your actions, is welcomed and essential. The debate should always be about the actions.
no
My fear is having a bunch of people in leadership positions that have done things that might make people want to cancel them!
so what gets canceled? Who? why do some get canceled and some not?
This is why I can’t ever run for office, or even be a high level advisor. I never posted anything racist or sexist, but I did get kicked out of college for an honor code violation (I was let back in, but that won’t stop them). Cancel me now, I guess. I could never be a public figure. Fuck any chance I had at learning or growing from that mistake, it is a forever stain that will never allow me to do anything ever again, right?
What about writing homophobic blog posts? Is that cancel-worthy if you’re a public figure? Because I can think of a person off the top of my head who not only didn’t get canceled for that very thing, but just got rewarded with their own prime time fucking TV show. I guess homophobia’s ok though.
Then define what is cancel worthy, or we’re going to end up with literally no one who is pure enough to lead
In theory, as long as people apologize and try to make up for their bad behavior, they should be fine. But I can’t know whether that would work in real life or not, because that step almost never happens.
I think their joke went over your head and there have been some perfect posts already on this. This isnt an “issue” that is black and white and has boundaries. Most “cancel culture” type stuff is actual gamergate level stuff. It is explicitly in bad faith and not to be confused with someone just normally facing consequences for their actions.
if you’re using ‘cancel culture’ unironically, the debate is completely different.
This doesn’t have to be defined and it never had to be defined. There have always been social norms that cancelled people’s opportunities. In our lifetimes Mr. Buttigieg would have been canceled for not hiding that he’s gay. We are literally evolving from that to making people suffer the consequences of being racist or homophobic and we’ve got Noam Chomsky leaping to the defense of the homophobes and Nazis so their “alternative” views can be discussed freely and in good faith. Its a joke.
If you listen to the Citations Needed podcast on this, they make the point that there’s certainly a discussion to be had about how/when “cancel culture” goes too far, but the people who wrote that letter are clearly not acting in good faith and they should be told to piss off.
In general, if your argument includes only examples of things that never happened and you keep getting more and more upset about those things (that never happened), you probably aren’t about to produce a good post.
I wonder if my perspective on this is different because of things like gamergate and being a woman on the internet. To me, the internet mob is a real and scary thing, because I saw what happened with that and what happens to women on the internet every single day.
It hits home when people get doxxed for things they did or said 30 years ago…because that is a very real and scary threat for any woman who speaks up on just about anything online.
I mean, I never hid it…I published an article in fucking newsweek about it. But man some of the letters I got. Newsweek even flagged a couple with notes to contact authorities if I wished because they were legit death threats.
Joy Reid.
What happened to Joy Reid?
She just got a new show!!
Also there were homophobic comments she posted on a blog but instead of admitting she did it she came up with some crazy excuse that hackers got into the way back machine and changed what she wrote to make it homophobic, at least that’s what I remember
she;s the example of I guess homophobia is a-ok, because she not only kept her job, but got rewarded with a prime time show
