The deal is almost complete. Barring any hiccups Iām getting this all-wheel-drive GMC Safari which Iām going to turn into a campervan!!!
Itās in (near) Seattle. Gonna have to pick it up. My brother lives in (near) Seattle and heās picking it up and will hold it for me until I can get it.
There are hardly any of these available down in CA with all-wheel-drive and itās $1800. The only one Iāve seen down here recently is $6900 and is 5 years older - though with fewer miles. (eta: I did look at one for $3800 but it was badly rusted)
I am thinking of doing stuff like this to it:
eta: Iām now on astrosafari.com. They donāt seem to have any politics discussion.
If you come get the when weāre past covid, I recommend a Seattle area meetup.
Also, went ācampingā this weekend. Far cry from our old days of tent camping.
Would love to. If I get this one (the guy took money to hold it - waiting on xfer of the rest of the money) Iāll be getting it within a week or two - so no post covid. Hopefully soon though. Post-covid (if we ever get there) we can all caravan to JohnnyTruantās compound in Canada.
I never really finished my two week camping trip report. It was a blast. Here are some pictures of my dog enjoying the trip.
Grand Teton:
Black Hills:
Emery Bay near Glacier:
At the beginning of the video - the guy was walking towards a mother and her cub, filming them. The mother was laying in the trail between him and the cub. He kept approaching until she finally charged. The cat is not āstalkingā him as he claims. Sheās trying to tell him to get the fuck away from her cub. If she was stalking him he wouldnāt see her until she was upon him.
He did about what I would do if I saw animals ahead of me. What is that? Oh fuck oh fuck!
If you ever see a bear or cougar cub - back the hell away as fast as you can. If you see two - one is a cub, even if it looks big.
He also holds the camera on the cat the whole time. Youāre supposed to grab branches, scream and wave your arms trying to seem as big as possible. Never crouch all the way down though if the cat is at all close - that will be an invitation to charge and it will be on you like lightning.
Iāve always wondered if bear spray is effective with mountain lions. Any idea?
Maybe he was recording before that but he didnāt go forward more than a few feet before the mom came running at him. You made it sound like heās peering into their den or something. Do not run from bears. I donāt know how that applies to a bear with a cub but I know thatās what every ranger will tell you.
ETA: maybe i read your post wrong the first time or you edited. Yeah if he could see the mother he should def not be walking forward.
No idea. I canāt imagine the cat would like it.
The problem is 99% of the time if youāre attacked by a cat, they are going to jump on you from behind.
Who knows how long he had been approaching, but clearly the mom decided he had come far enough. He was trying to get closer to get a better shot of the cub. The correct move is to just stop as soon as you see them, maybe back up but keep it to where you can still see them, then wait for them to clear out on their own.
Maybe he didnāt see the mom. But still - just donāt approach a big cat trying to get a better shot. Dumb. The fact that the guy claims he was stalked shows he has no idea what heās talking about.

This thread explains everything much better than me. Yashar is becoming my favorite twitter follow.
He said he thought they were bobcats, which seems reasonable.
I was surprised the cougar followed him as far as it did. Do the cubs just know to stay put when momma leaves, like fawns do?
That makes a lot more sense. He still has āstalkedā in the title though - which is dumb.
Most mammal babies seem to know when just stay put and be quiet until mom gets back. Except human babies of course - utterly helpless.
Probably the most amusing part of my recent trip was seeing the bear spray rental places in Glacier. Those places must make a fortune. It was $9.25/day. You can get a can of it at Cabelaās or REI for $40. And yet there were tons of idiots lining up to rent a can for a few days for roughly what you could buy one for. Probably way less than 1% of rentals actually fire the damn thing. I have probably camped 60 nights in bear precaution areas and never even seen a bear in the wild much less had to use the damn thing. That being said if you did get into one of those situations not having it would be really dumb.
People always ask what they need to do for bear precautions. I always recommend getting bear spray as part of the usual deal assuming we are camping in an area where it is a real issue. None of my friends have been attacked by bears and they were pretty much all wondering why I told them to get it. Now I have 3 cannisters of bear spray from people giving them to me as we part ways haha.
