I think I unfortunately see myself in this post (except the boomer part). My doctor asked me about it a couple of years ago because I was borderline and I was like pass, “knowing” that statins are unsafe. Last year my blood work was better, so it wasn’t a topic. At least I can be made aware when I fall for bullshit. (I then dumbed down this thread by incorrectly confirmed my false impression of statins by confusing my elderly mother’s afib medicine issues as statin issues.)

As someone who’s tried every statin and been on them for 20+ years the muscle ache isn’t a nocebo effect. It’s much more of a thing if you need a high dose and most people can find a statin they can tolerate if they try enough of them.
I would get bad muscle aches waking me up in the middle of the night (feeling like a bad charlie horse or sometimes a cramp in the side of my calf muscle) when on 40mg Simvastatin or 80 mg Atorvastatin but can tolerate a max dose of Rosuvastatin fine.
Fortunately we are in a new era with PCSK9 inhibitors. I can get a way better efficacy with a small dose of statin combined with small dose of Zetia and a shot of Repatha or Praluent than I could ever get by just maxing out a statin. Like total cholesterol literally down from 475 to 150.
