The hits just keep coming.

Firstly Ruby Freidman Orchestra with You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.

@Pauwl won @mjiggy’s Soundtrack category. The award was explained:

I guess that leaves Pauwl alone on the podium with the one certified banger that was submitted to this category. Wire to wire winner, I’ll let the song speak for itself because I’m off to go listen to it again myself.

Then as good as song as exists, so probably an early casualty knowing you lot. Good Morning Captain by Slint.

I won @seities’s ‘Goosebumps’ round, he rightly realised that:

Oh man. This. This this this this this. I can’t put my thoughts about this track down in a coherent way yet but suffice to say the power of this one kept me awake for a while after my first proper listen.

I read that all band members were 18 or younger when they recorded the Spiderland album which this is from. Incredible. For me a number of the artistic choices here seem so mature, and so raw at the same time. I have a lot more I want to say, and at the same time don’t feel capable. In true Pyatnitski form, I could very easily see this song running dead last depending on the Walrus host, but for me this is absolute top shelf stuff.

Next Kenny Hoopla with the enjoyably named How Will I Rest in Peace if I’m Buried by a Highway.

@mjiggy took down @Yuv’s song from 2020 category to get this honour. Yuv told us:

This was so far and away my favorite song. I don’t know what KennyHoopla is, if it’s a dude or a band, but this is a great song. Liked it from the first listen. I’m just happy whoever sent it didn’t end up shipping it to Rivaldo’s category. Good job, well deserved win.

Continuing we have Halestorm explaining that I Get Off.

@LouisCyphre won a ‘Filthy’ category adjudicated by @CanadaMatt3004, who justified the decision thusly:

Oh hey, did I mention I love rock bands fronted by kick ass women?

Yeah, I do.

Few do it better than Lzzy. Inject this shit straight into my veins. Then increase the dosage since its a song entirely about exhibitionism and Voyeurism. 1st place by days Louis, congrats.

Then it’s Gogol Bordello with Immigraniada.

@Yuv took down a Category all about songs that feature ‘Yeah!’ (or ‘Hey!’ or ‘Yo!’ etc.). @Rivaldo was the judge and explained:

Poignant stuff, very topical. Every face in this video is beautiful.

Imee Granny ada!!!

Finally for now please judge James Lawson & Phil Reynolds bringing us It’s A Dream.

This was decided to be the best “hit the dancefloor” EDM sort of thing by @miliboo (who was correct about @ChrisV ). Context:

Perfect pace (150bpm imo), kinda dark synthetic sounds, hi-hats galore, whispering sample ‘it’s a dream’, builds and builds to that first break at 3:00. (Time to stop dancing, look around, take it all in, listen to those sounds!!). Uplifting again
we’re off
150bpm rahhh, so fucking good.

Perfection, congrats to whoever submitted this (I think ChrisV). It took me back to some of the best moments and memories of my younger, carefree days. I kinda hate you for that!

I have serious doubts whether It’s A Dream gets votes from anyone other than me and miliboo lol.

Edit: Also I’m just listening to it again and fuck, it’s a banger.

This category seems rough: one of my own submissions, one of my favorite submissions to my walrus, and a couple of others I enjoyed in the moment.

Huh. I hardly remember these. Nice.

Liked this group the best so far, but two stand out to me: Gogol Bordello and Kenny Hoopla

Clearly it should win this whole damn thing.

Had no idea this thread existed til now. Should have time tonight to get voting.

You’d be wrong. It’s a little faster than I normally like my EDM, but it’s good.

Had to vote for Justified, even though I actually like original just as much for the creativity. This cover is more traditional, and I get why they did it, but combining bluegrass and rap/hiphop was pretty awesome to me.

I voted for the song I sent and the song I gave 1st place to because the world revolves around me.

Gotta listen to the last track but I think those two might be my winners too
sad to not choose Pauwl’s submission to me since I still listen to it but that Gogol song has grown on me.

Really wish people picked more sub-five minute winners!

Edit: ok that EDM song is actually really good, great choice, unfortunately it’s just not my type of music.

You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive-Hell yeah. Also gets me biased as from KY. Absolutely love this

Good Morning, Captain-Not bad, but not sure why this needed to go 8 minutes. And I’m partial to 8 minute songs done right. Maybe this is once again a failure on me not really caring about lyrics.

How Will I Rest in Peace if I’m Buried by a Highway-Ok this was fun. Never heard of KennyHoopla

I Get Off-Yeah this is what female rock should be. I got off on this.

Immigraniada-Fun song, but not beating I Get Off my currect second choice.

It’s a Dream-Some real solid EDM, but my vote is for Harlan and I Get Off

Seriously, every time I hear it I want to start rewatching Justified. Not that I have time. But still

We can’t stop now.

First up pop perfection from The Cure with Friday I’m in Love.

I gave @mjiggy the win when I asked for the Best Pop Song Ever. Stating:

Anyway, enough biographical waffle, whoever submitted this also took the time to do a write up for me.

Man how do you rank the best pop song of all time? You want something catchy, with simple lyrics that are both easy to make out and memorable, and preferably a great hook. This song sort of lacks that chorus/refrain that pop songs benefit from but it has one of the more interesting structures I can think of and the repeating of the days of the week is a genius mechanism for making it easy sing along with. Both the intro and little musical bridges are wonderfully catchy and, most importantly, not too long, so you get back to the part that people really like.

It’s a song that always feels like one long, deeply, satisfyingly catchy chorus to me, but still with plenty of variety and the above fleshes out the details far better than I could. I just know that when I focused all effort internally and gazed into the deepest part of my soul, I was revolted and thoughts of my mother overwhelmed me and this was the song I was most pleased to hear whenever it came on.

Then we’ve the great Siouxsie and the Banshees covering a cartoon snake with Trust in me.

@skydiver8 persuaded @NotBruceZ that this was the best cover ever by someone with a different gender to the original artist. He explained the decision:

This song comes from the 1987 album of covers Through the Looking Glass. It’s an inspired choice for original material and it’s probably getting some points just for that. The song from The Jungle Book is transformed into the beckoning of a sultry temptress, backed by harp and drums. There’s a certain maturity here for a band that has evolved from punk to post-punk. I like that sort of growth.

And another similarly great band, Stiff Little Fingers singing about an Alternative Ulster.

@Yuv won @skydiver8’s category about songs about specific places. She said:

Someone (Yuv) has my tastes pegged perfectly. I know I left it wide open in the category description, but I certainly didn’t expect to get the “maudlin sounds of the university station.” This was the hands down winner from the very first listen. Nothing else could catch up. I love the genre, of course, but the guitar hook is great and the whole thing is a perfect example of what punk was originally about. Imagine me jumping around my room screaming the chorus because that’s pretty much exactly what happens when I listen to this song. Play this at open mic night and the manager would kick you out after staring in horror as the patrons jump on the tables and throw a couple chairs. Maybe start a fight. Fuck yeah.

Next Vive La Fete and Noir Desir.

@Pauwl won @seities’ songs containing a Scream round. Our spiritual leader told us that:

Wow. I would say this one operates to the reverse of 2nd place, because it starts in a really beautiful place and then descends into chaos and discomfort. I really enjoy everything about this. The beat, the vocals, the electronic twinkles weaving through the sound. As the track goes on it adds in changes of pace and becomes increasing frantic. The music fades out to a heartbeat, then comes back in and ascends around an increasingly dominant scream, finally closing out in a raw and devastating way, marking the end of the descent. This had me captivated from start to finish. Congratulations on the win, and thanks for the epic submission.

Then we have Mental as Anything and Too Many Times.

@Rexx regined supreme in @seities’s short songs category. We were told:

Like I said in an earlier reveal, I had a kinda crappy day on Tuesday. The more I went through this entries, the further this bubbled up the list.

What is there left to do

But to drink and watch the view?

I think that it might rain this afternoon

It’s interesting since this track and “Somebody’s Crying” are ostensibly about the same topic, but under the circumstances this song elevated my mood the more I listened to it. It helped remind me that, as inspirational Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot said - ”um
well sometimes shit happens, doesn’t it?” - but you can still choose your approach to it.

Nice submission Rexx, and a worthy winner of this philosophical Walrus reveal.

Finally the obvious pick of the round, Seafood with Scorch Comfort.

I won @SwankyWilder’s category about debut singles with this really good debut single. He explained:

This couldn’t have been more up my street if it had moved in next door, rang my bell, and left me a cold socially distanced beer on the front step.

I absolutely loved everything about it.

What an astute judge of music he can be!

Hardest choices so far for me this round. Great selection, and always good to see a late 70’s new wavey bias. Having said that Vive la Fete = Noir Desir is a clear winner for me, really good. Missed it the first go around as well so thanks for this public service pyat.
Hoping @seities rejoins the fray soon
