Bailout / Stimulus Discussion (Hints Missed & Shartz Fired)

Let us imagine a world in which Democrats don’t cave on this.

Actually, don’t do that. It is too depressing.

Seems like a bunch of no-interest loans to restaurants and bars and theaters and such would be a no-brainer. These places are going to be back up and running in a year.

How are they still debating a stimulus package while Trump declares everything is just fine. I was a sweet summer child to think they’d figure this out today.

I mean all well and good if you want Trump to take that bullet by outright lying to people, but the backup plan at that point is to make sure a safety net is in place when the bottom falls out

The crazy thing about right wing politics is they are always digging their own graves.

The real GOP donors are losing billions right now. Sheldon Adelson has lost tens of billions of dollars. Private business owners’ net worth is crushed and their businesses are on the brink of collapse. Executive types have lost a third of their market wealth.

They’re just so fucking selfish and stupid and infuriatingly short sighted that they thought Trump was worth a few percent tax cut. Stone cold fucking morons.

Wtf is happening here

@geewhysee didn’t read the Twitter thread and now he’s asleep.

Damn, I got got.

I’d be enjoying the schadenfreude if I wasn’t so scared

Tbf, Trump donors would have lost just as much under a Dem administration and may not have been in line for as big of a bailout. I doubt Hillary would have had the courage or foresight to declare a national emergency back in early February to contain this thing.

Hillary would have sent a pandemic team over to China to help when China first reported problems. She also would have listened to doctors.

Trump has flat out ignored this until the market crashed like 10 days ago and it’s only because he wants the Dow to go up.

She would have delayed it getting here maybe. Hospitals wouldn’t be running out of masks probably. She wouldn’t be advocating a bill to send millions to her own private business surely. But we would still have a pandemic. The markets would still crash, probably harder because she would use her office to force governors into locking down their states. All of this is true, and we would probably have fewer people die in the long run. However, from a GOP donor perspective things would be worse under Hillary.

Yeah, I reeeaaaaallllly don’t want to relitigate 2016, but I do remember (a) that Hillary Clinton was one of the main healthcare policy wonks in the Bill Clinton administration (b) she was a Secretary of State who actually seemed to work pretty well with world leaders and (c) she started a foundation with her family that had, as one of it’s main missions, identifying and responding to global health needs, so I feel pretty comfortable saying that the President Hillary response would have been a million times better.

Lmao nice

It’s hard to guess and impossible to know how things would have been with Hillary in charge. This is a once in a century kinda thing and it’s not trumps fault that the most successful businesses of today can’t survive even two weeks without revenue. It’s the result of forty years of the neoliberal project. Forcing companies to push the limits of profitability and leverage as a result.

I suppose we could make a nominal list of actual leaks that lead to the pandemic. I don’t know how many Hillary would have stopped. Apparently bill gates told the internet that this would be no big deal 2-3 weeks ago. He’s probably lost tens of billions of dollars on paper since then and didn’t think it would be a big deal. I’ve read a couple articles that he’s written that rant about the dangers of the Spanish flu, so it’s not like this was something unknown to him.

I think what I’m trying to say is that this was a sort of friction fire. Nature rubbing up against capitalism, one of them had to give.

Absolutely it would be better, but thus far only a couple countries have done well containing this thing. They happen to be countries with the most experience combating new viruses. Imo Hillary wouldn’t have done any better than France, Spain, and Germany. Honestly she would probably have done worse just because of the way our government is set up. 1,000,000x better than Trump doesn’t stop economic chaos in this situation.

The stock market is 100% trumps doing. He’s been saying it for years.

It is absolutely Trump’s fault that companies can’t survive two weeks without revenue, him and his administration did everything they could to encourage speculation, risk taking and leverage to prop up the Dow Joans.

W/ Hillary companies would be more responsible and be able to survive 3 weeks…

Good point about Hillary being the most qualified candidate to handle a pandemic maybe ever, and not being sarcastic. W/ that expertise and not having an aggressively hostile stance towards China all day, every day (thus encouraging cooperation rather than obfuscation by the Chinese), maybe this gets nipped in the bud from the start and doesn’t become a worldwide pandemic.

Not to mention the butterfly effect probably causing the Coronavirus never being a thing in the first place under Hillary :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

We still might have had to go on lockdown, but economic chaos is significantly less when companies and investors think someone competent is guiding the ship. How much sooner would we have fully grocked the problem if we weren’t firing the folks on the NSC that monitor the pandemic or if we still had the CDC folks in China specifically working with their government? Heck, even without those things, Senators had enough intel to start selling off stock in late January.

Yes, this virus was going to be catastrophic for any President, but even while acknowledging that I’m not going to give a pass to the specific ways in which this President made it worse.
