The hilarious thing is that while Trickle Down Economics is bullshit, Trickle Up definitely works. Give money to everyone and they will spend it.
Sure it’s easier for the wealthy to capture that money in handouts directly to the wealthy, but when you pump that much money into the economy everyone is gonna do just fine.
Latest as of last night is that they’re closer. Pelosi told Congressional Democrats that while she hopes for a deal by the end of this week, it’s most likely to happen next week. Everything I’ve seen suggests they’re holding hard on the $600 past the beginning of the year.
They absolutely should not cave on the $600 or the business protection nonsense. So I guess they may not recess after this week is what you are saying?
The House won’t recess until a deal is done (already supposed to be in recess). I haven’t heard any word on what the Senate will do if a deal isn’t made (their recess is 4 weeks). My guess is they’ll pass something on Friday and then the House votes on it early next week. I’m guessing Pelosi is hoping for a Thursday passage and a Friday vote in the House as her Hail Mary of getting something done this week.
I will admit that I am woefully uninformed of the behind the scenes machinations but don’t they actually have to write the bill at some point as well? I would assume that would take some time. Or do they just Frankenstein together the compromise?
Meanwhile here in AZ we had a client who DID NOT apply for unemployment and is still working receive a debit card from the state with $9000 on it. The state is so overloaded some people still haven’t gotten paid for months.
We also had a client apply for a small PPP loan and he said he woke up and had $45k in his account (the max) a couple days later. But people who need food? Fuck them they can wait. Gotta give them hard working white people and “small” businesses extra runway first.
My girlfriend is on leave from American Airlines so she’s in some unemployment groups on Facebook and it’s devastating. We’re so far removed from the true pain and suffering it’s crazy. People in AZ are now down to $240 a week and there are so many people with multiple kids who can’t even get food. And now since the GOP let the $600 lapse even if they passed a new law today it would take over a month to implement.
Pretty sure Mitch has already written the bill they’re working from. I’d guess aides are writing in their agreed upon items each night after the meeting. If anything, I’d think it would be like a Madlib that data just gets plugged into. The idea of these meetings is to create the framework of the bill so they can just input data. That’s the only reason I think it might be more of a Madlib setup. In other words, we know x y and z will be in the bill but we haven’t agreed on terms. That can obviously be written as they go.
They passed an almost 500 page tax bill that contained handwritten notes and strikethrus, so IF they really want to move on something, the actual mechanics of drafting it won’t be the barrier.
That’s the problem, Schumer said the Republicans haven’t even agreed on framework which is why it’s difficult to get anywhere. The Democrats can just keep setting up the framework, because whatever gets passed will have a significant amount of Democratic approval. They’re not passing a GOP version of any bill.
The more I think about it the more I am realizing not compromising at all is the right play. Do we really think voters are going to lay this at the feet of Dems if nothing gets passed? No. They are the only ones who have passed a bill to help the American people. The Republicans aren’t even capable of passing ANY BILL in the Senate.
Letting it burn right before the election is also probably sound strategy if you can’t get a decent bill passed. Let people feel the full disaster that is Donald Trump. Bailing these evil morons out through “compromise” would both be super dumb and quintessential Chuck and Nancy.
