Anonymous Poll for Lurkers

This is entirely my experience, except I now get drunk and post memes here on the weekend since I can’t really go out to bars anymore. Your loss Unstuck.

Have we ever polled active users to see if any came from other than 2+2?

At least one member is a moderator’s son, iirc.

I am interested in politics but rarely have time to discuss / argue in real time. That being said, the level of insight and depth of reasoning from the regular posters makes this site an invaluable source of news

Huge fan. Really enjoy the insights. I just don’t follow closely enough to keep up with the pace of the popular threads, and have little to offer. I do post occasionally though.

I rarely post because I’m pretty bad at it, and the depth of knowledge here is insane so I don’t have a lot to add. I also steal a lot of the stuff good posters say so I can sound clever to my friends. I also don’t mind a bit of drama but the c-word argument is too much even for me.

Regular posters here are waaaaay smarter than me when it comes to political topics. I learn way more than I can contribute. When I can contribute, I do so.

I am pretty introverted and don’t feel a need or desire to post. I still feel part of the place.

I post sometimes, but I also wasn’t/am much of a regular poster in politics on 2+2 as well; I guess that’s the reason for mainly lurking for me.

I used to read the politics forum at 2+2. I followed the exiled group to the exile site, then here. I mainly use it as a place to hear about news items (e.g. what batshit crazy things are going on in politics).

I don’t post much because I feel it would take a lot of time, and I’m short on time as it is. Also I think many political discussions are black holes

This sounds to me like an argument against megathreads. They are already hard to keep up with for very active users. Jumping into a discussion that has been going on for thousands of posts sets the bar very high and must be daunting.
For example in the covid thread there are a lot of different topics discussed at the same time: medical information, lockdown strategies, personal experiences, in-person school vs. virtual learning, vaccines etc.
A casual reader/lurker might very be interested in one of these topics but having to read all of them is a big ask.

This is one of the things we hear over and over again. Maybe we should have dedicated news aggregation threads with very little discussion. These could be linked to on Twitter and could offer an entry point to the forum without having to jump right into the deep end.

I’m pro megathread. They are where the community part happens. We’re much more several overlapping groups carrying on multiple conversations than we are a news aggregator.

Can you do a group that hides all posts that contain the word “pony”?

Pony jokes have a subtle surreal quality to them. It also is a distinctive feature of this board unlike all the other boards out there!

Do people get told they’ve been ponied and it like ruins their day or something? Honestly. Who cares?

I’m ahead of my time yet again.

One day you people will learn.

I always took pony jokes as gentle derision. Not something that would ever keep anyone from posting anything for fear of being called out. But that’s just me.

This is how I felt about them. Hopefully nobody ever took a pony joke I made to heart.

Actually, this is not exactly where I was going with the shorthand “aggregator”. I can and do get the big headlines that interest me easily from other sources. It’s exactly the comments of people who might know better than some “journalist”, and people posing related links and so on that has the value for me.

So it’s more of a “Learn more about current headlines” that I’m interested in. For that reason, what would increase page-views from my side is “more discussion of other political headlines from around the world”.
