Ads on Unstuck

If anyone owns Unstuck, it’s simplicitus.

Can we agree on no ads with pictures of Trump

Can you at least pretend to have enough respect for us to stop this dissembling bullshit?

Perfect

wookie did that last one. it took him like less than a minute through unofficial means, so that’s a 1-minute job that you didn’t even really do. so which other points on this list take 1 minute and/or you’re just pretending you did them?

but i get it, your point is it’s too much work. and i agree, it seems like too much for a hobby. so it comes down to, will the community now hire a guy (you) full time to run this forum, or do we decide that we tried this idea and we found out it’s too much work and it’s way more expensive and time consuming than just paying for some company to host the forum? we definitely learned something this summer. how long do you want to be miserable with this hobby project that you don’t even seem to enjoy? at some point you have to reevaluate and say, “ok, now that i know what’s involved, which is the best idea going forward?” and i encourage you to make a personal decision because from the outside it looks like you’re growing frustrated and resentful towards the other members and i miss your great posts from when you were just a casual forum poster.

to me all this SPF and DKIM and DNS sounds like a job, it doesn’t sound like a fun hobby. i mean this forum is top notch, i love the auto loading posts when there’s a debate, but is all this extra effort worth it for that? i love it but i don’t want you to kill yourself over it

if your motivation is out of obligation to the community at the expense of your misery, i encourage you to quit because i like you and i want you to be happy. if you view your work here as an investment in building a business for yourself, i think you should be up front about that

I’m getting an ad for sex offenders in my area. Should I be worried?

Depends. Is it an ad for a dating site?

If there’s a way to do this on iOS I’d like to know how

So I did that and got an icon on my home screen, but it just opens up the site in safari with no evident differences.

Yeah all of those things are still there for me. Maybe later I’ll try different browsers. In any case, not a big deal.

I haven’t used ad to home screen on iOS forever but I seem to remember it just creating a link shortcut in safari.

All is right with the world. Razors, mattresses, full stack development courseware, still the occasional stable genius flash poll but nbd.

if a poster were to make an account and start a thread or make a post (a special colored one that takes up 1/3 of my screen lol) that said SHOULD PRESIDENT TRUMP DEPORT ALL ILLEGALS? []yes []no it would be received negatively by 100% of the community and if someone were to say “hey this isn’t even a real person, it’s a autoscript program” not one person would want it to continue. but because the guy who currently has admin power for some reason profits $0.05 off of it and we all have to deal. a guy who now admits that he works a half hour a day gets to make a decision for his benefit that negatively effects every other user. meanwhile i spend 2-3 hours a day creating content for the site and i’m getting treated like the asshole, ok, ok, fine, i’m the asshole. but i’m right.

We literally have a bot who posts racist garbage all day and he’s one of the community’s most iconic fixtres.

Thought I’d share my opinion. I’m pro-ad, and I was originally pro taking the NRA’s money to serve ads to us while we rip them a new one and hope for their demise. Then I realized that there’s a chance that these right wing groups have identified that advertising on progressive forums gets them some conversions and/or lurker eyeballs… And while, yeah, Judicial Watch is probably just stupidly mashing buttons, the NRA may actually know what it’s doing.

So now I’m pro advertisements and anti evil ads.

As for what should happen to the money, I’m currently in favor of the people handling that stuff stockpiling it and stopping donations for the time being as long as it covers operating costs.

I’m open to being convinced that I’m wrong, or told that I’m a capitalist pig, but I don’t have any financial interest in it… I do think we’re a community full of good people and getting our hands on any amount of as revenue to do good things with is a good move. Maybe we clear $100/mo after hosting/expenses and give it to the top four candidates in a sitewide poll. Maybe we give it to a charity helping families at the border. Having those options seems better than not having those options.

Also, hats off to everyone involved so far. We’ve gone from making Mason Malmuth money to arguing over what to do with the money we generate after being nuked, escaping, regrouping, and starting our own site which already functions way better than the old site on a technical level. A lot of people thought we were a joke and wouldn’t make it this far. So let’s not all turn on each other just yet.

Just read this thread for first time. I think I own the domain, but micro has full power to muck with it if he wanted. If we had a charter or some form of corporate or non-profit org, I could transfer it over to that. Doesn’t seem worth messing with at current stakes.

Like the ads if they raise money, with no exceptions for patrons. Ads are now a ubiquitous part of life: block, ignore, laugh, comment, or click. I like seeing wingnut grift sites waste money, and I like to see who’s spending.

I think it would be fine if the triumvirate voted occasional partial distribution of funds based on 1) actual need for stuff, 2) their sense of who did work, 3) their feelings.

Ideally there would be a monthly triumvirate conference call to discuss status, plans, budget, design, growth, admin issues, etc. Someone could be appointed to take and post minutes.

Governance of entities is kind of a solved problem. Just need some effort and enough inclination not to be an anarcho-socialist collective.

Currently have a Tulsi 2020 ad. That’s worth it right there. Costs her money and is interesting, relevant information.

Imagine if there were a free, resource-efficient browser extension that magically identified those bot posters before they ever even made a post, and put them on your ignore list. You would never even know of the poster’s existence unless others quoted or talked about it.

Now what if I told you that such extensions exist?

Ok you already knew that but I should also point out that these days, everyone should be using a blocker anyway. Not doing so is actually a security risk, given the existence of malvertising even on major, benign sites. What sucks about malvertising is that your machine can get infected even if you don’t click the ad. So not using a blocker these days is like having your firewall turned off. Turn it on and if you want ads on a site, you can whitelist it.

You might be thinking, why should you have to install something because of a conscious decision by Unstuck? Well, chances are Unstuck isn’t the only site you visit, so you need to install it anyway.

And it is contained in one thread, literally the definition of having to choose to read his content. Every other page I load I get a quarter page ad in support of the current administration and it’s not a calming influence. This experiment has run it’s course at this point it’s making money off our suffering.
