Ads on Unstuck

Every ad is objectionable as it’s a tool used by corporations to poison the minds of the people.

I never like to see a google ad under any circumstances, but also can deal with it if it means income for the site. Ideally unstuck would ink a multi-dollar deal with an internet based mattress company so that every thing I read or listen to comes down to selling me mattresses. Hopefully this post increases the chances that the next ad I see is for a mattress.

I don’t think ads for good things are bad. Ideally I would like it if we could select and approve advertisers and pick people and organizations doing good things and worker coops and such.

There has now been $3.67 generated today.

That’s no Mercator.

That’s some trippy stuff, yeah I pasted the snip into the edit by accident and deleted it pretty fast

I can see the site now, a nice purple background and Tim & Eric’s face everywhere.

I’m kind of OK with this. I mean, if a whole bunch of Koch funded dark money gets wasted showing us ads for gun rights, I think maybe that’s a good thing?

I guess it depends on whether we stay mostly just us or get more users.

I’m pretty sure that there are going to be many different and irreconcilable takes on ads around here.

I already know I’m not a fan of the responsive sized ones. They get obnoxiously big.

Agree. I think the regulars here can see the humor in getting endless right wing grift ads, but not sure it’s the best look for newcomers–at least not the types of newcomers we’d like. Are there options to move the ads to the bottom of pages or somehow make them less conspicuous?

I’ve been looking over the options, and we have pretty granular control over which ad categories we show, including opt-in only ones for gambling and booze. We can also review the ads that have been shown and block ones we don’t like.

We can also block ads linking to specific URLs.

Are you guys getting rightwing ads? I’m getting Planned Parenthood and Tulsi ads.

Yep. I’m also getting blasted by Billy Graham’s… kid? Grandkid?

I find it pretty fascinating (and depressing) that talking about politics on the internet in 2019 basically means you’re identified as a prime target for the griftosphere.

I think we’re going to need to address this at some point and maybe have one or more polls and maybe keep a list of ads to block etc or not. But, imho we should let it run as is for a bit and let it sink in a bit for more people.
