About Moderation (old original thread)

Well, in my definition “bad faith” has an element of disingenuousness or dishonesty. Nothing in the posts I have been repeatedly accused of making in bad faith contains either.

Now, if you meant just good old-fashioned trolling, then that’s a different matter.

Ah, so you admit you were trolling then? Ok, that’s fair I suppose.

People round here seem to use “bad faith” and “trolling” interchangeably. One is a circle contained entirely within the other.

I think “bad faith” as used by many here is just “an argument I find irritating”.

To be fair, my initial post had absolutely nothing to do with D2, was not targeted at him, and did not mention him. Also, if the issue with the thread is D2 constantly diarrheaing (sp?) all over it, perhaps the better answer is to merely restrict him to 1 post per 15 minutes in the particular thread? Or is that not possible?

Interested in what the argument being presented is in the post “hehe, I just liked this post using the word you find offensive.”

I’ll volunteer to restrict myself to one post per 15 minutes for the next 12 hours, and will eat a ban if I violate it. @goofyballer , you can open it back up.

Not as magnanimous as it sounds, I’m going to bed in a minute and want something to read for the morning.

Correct.

Seems a bit hyperbolic. I don’t dislike this forum, and the trolling that I do is pretty light-hearted, and not nearly as many of my posts are actually trolling as I’m accused of. A lot of that stems from simply holding an unpopular opinion in the “c-word” debate.

Thanks, much obliged.

Personal attack that gets a ban until tomorrow morning. Please don’t respond in kind.

eta: I get that the whole exchange there involving d2_e2 was flirting with attacks.

It’s not always even that, it’s often just “this is a phrase I have occasionally seen used prior to someone being dismissed, I will now use it in hopes that the person is subsequently dismissed”.

If there’s no argument being presented then it’s straightforwardly not a bad-faith argument.

It might slow down those super-funny, edgy, “you can’t tell me what to do” people if the upcoming filter replaces the c-word with the n-word.

Right, which is why I said it was posting in bad faith. Like, even d2 admitted he was trolling (which is, I guess, shockingly not against microbet’s new temporary higher standard), so this is… a bad take.

Is it really? I said I was policing personal attacks.

lol come on man

See, I don’t think this is bad faith at all. He genuinely supports use of the c-word. He’s just being deliberately provocative, which isn’t necessarily forbidden, but it can run afoul of other things.

Well then, we’ve officially thread the needle of the difference between trolling and arguing in bad faith. Enlightening convo we are having over here in the moderation thread.

Next up, the difference between lighting a forest fire and starting one!

Did your bump start or light this latest fire?

A+. Would read again.

Honestly, if you think back to 22 there was always a group that cried about moderation they just don’t have Mason to cry to any more. Sometimes I was even in this group although I never really went to ATF to handle my issues.

The people who are the most vocal in that thread (by the metric of % of posts) are crying and attacking mods for implementing a rule that hasn’t been implemented. People voted. The side of good and justice lost. We’ll get another shot soon and reason will prevail next time.

So keep meming witty things like that makes things true. People trying to apply justice fairly can tell the difference. Saying something funny doesn’t make it true.

You bumped a dormant thread and things heated up again. They probably would of anyway but what I said is true.

As far as me being evil for wanting light modding. Ok I guess.

FWIW, the bolded is a big part of why I didn’t press ahead with my offer to help with admin duties.

I mean, it’s clear that different people have different visions of what they want this forum to be. Many of the most vocal posters in threads like this seem to want a rather juvenile 2p2-like environment where insults, trolling, and other more and less subtle ways of being a jerk are allowed.

I think though that with the variety of intelligent, knowledgeable, and thoughtful people here the forum could become something much more rare and special. Sadly (for me), I don’t see that happening any time soon. The forum as it exists isn’t worth expending more of my precious (to me) and limited time and energy on.

Anyway, probably no one will give a shit, but since everyone else seems to feel free to say whatever they want, I thought I’d throw that out there.
