What’s your point?
That we need to be spending a lot more money on psychiatric emotional services.
what were you hoping would have happened? it seems like a waste of public funds to investigate this. buy a camera if you care this much.
That was mine as well
I was hoping he’d do his fucking job, but that hope went out the window when I realized he was only a cop because the only other alternative he had was washing cars for $12/hr. Also, go fuck yourself.
It actually kind of is their fault. They lobby effectively for massive and ever increasing budgets that leave little money for other services.
COPS was still on the air in 2020? Wow that’s a hell of a run.
Most of the conversation on defunding or abolishing has been based on police being racist/violent, which is absolutely the right place to start.
But, I think it’s just as big of an issue that police budgets have exploded, technology has improved and they don’t solve more crimes! Clearance rates have been basically stagnant since Clinton was president, despite crime rates being way down for violent crime since then.
What about the real important stuff? Like how else we gonna know when our brake light goes out or if we carelessly speed? Who’s going to extort people out of their money if not our brave heavily armed cops?
If its about messaging I like defund and refund.
Defund the police
Refund schools
Refund social care
Refund health services
Refund mental health care
One fewer armoured police car buys xxx maths textbooks.
100 fewer tear gas launchers pays for 10 social workers for struging children
Etc.
Had a good defend the police moment yesterday.
I was at a voting precinct in the Atlanta area (heavily blue, minority) that I know to be a problem due to lack of parking, space, etc. It was a shit show as expected. When 7 pm rolls around, the procedure is supposed to be that a poll worker comes outside, and indicates who the last voter in line is. But because there wasn’t enough budget to pay poll workers enough to entice them enough to work a 16 hour day during COVID-19, they instead had to call the Sheriff’s office to enforce the end of the line.
Two heavily armed sheriffs roll into the voting precinct parking lot with their SUV, with their K9 dog loudly barking at everyone standing in line. They have to engage with the last voter in line, who seems a little uncomfortable with the interaction. In the meantime, a south Asian immigrant shows up and is wanting to get information about registering and voting in November, and in general the deputies just have a shit attitude about everything. I end up helping the lady out.
So ITT a lot of you seem to think that I’m proposing extra qualifications on police because I think it’ll make them better. You’re totally missing my point. This is a way of reducing the total number of cops by making hiring cops infinitely harder.
What I think would actually change police behavior is drastically more liability. There are two jobs in the US that currently have crazy amounts of job security that I’m 1000% sure shouldn’t and those are cop and teacher. Both should be paid quite a bit better and it should be fairly difficult to keep the job without being obviously excellent.
Yes. 911 operators should have more choices when they get a call about a deranged person. First choice is mental health interventionists. If there’s a weapon involved or clear threats of violence, they also dispatch police.
Many police will support this since the mentally ill are so much of their load. Police unions might not – jealously holding on to funds.
Imagine seizing that car and then finding an excuse not to send it to auction.
God it’s a driving photo op for having your budget cut. If I’m leading a police force I’d rather torch it than keep it.
This. Is. The. Most. Toxic. LA. Shit. I. Have. Ever. Seen.
Ban police departments & the military forces from sponsoring charity events. Ban cops and the troops from appearing in uniform in charity advertising.
?
It wasn’t seized. It doesn’t belong to LAPD. It is a loaner from some ahole.
