Sure but the mottos defund and abolish are miles apart. I’m not convinced defund is a winner but sure maybe. I’m certain abolish is a terrible, losing slogan.
None that I can think of
Okay so I don’t think that a slogan that’s not supported by any politicians will turn off too many voters this November. What do you and others worried about the slogan of activist groups think will happen? Is the theory that it will get trump voters to come out more or will “swing state moderates” be turned off from voting for Biden because of a slogan he doesn’t support in the slightest? Just trying to understand the perspective.
I’ll not say I’m worried but if 10% of the messaging out there is abolish and 90% is defund then 100% of the republican messaging will be conflating the defund movement with the abolish movement. And it will work because people will be all yeah I have heard people say abolish the police.
If your primary policy goal is to make white moderates uncomfortable then ok, great slogan, it will work great.
Well, my first choice was “Blue Lives Don’t Matter”.
Looks like ‘Cops’ has been abolished from the TV
I don’t think “hiring better police” really helps that much. It gets you to Canada or UK levels, maybe but I dont know if that’s good enough long term. Obviously you shouldn’t be able to hire people with records of abuse or a history of violence. But, if we start requiring degrees and perfection, it just becomes a profession for upper middle class white people which isn’t great imo.
I have a close family member who is contracted to basically control the hiring process for city police in a large Canadian city. To even get to the interview process you have to give police 3-5 years of bank/telephone records and they need a list of everyone you’ve dated/worked for/close family. Even a HS fling. Every single one of these people get interviewed. A single lie gets you turfed.
Some guy recently admitted to having sex with animals though, so at least they weren’t hired.
This reminds me of one of my more recent experiences with the police, qualification wise. My MIL came over to my house complaining that she couldn’t open her driver’s door from the inside anymore. I went out to the driveway and looked at it (2003 Honda Accord) and the chrome strip between the window and door panel had black fingerprints all over it. I pulled the plate for the inside door handle off and the linkage was broken. Went back inside and asked her if she had her car parked on the driveway and she said yes and I told her someone had tried to steal her car. Called the cops and the worthless POS that responded didn’t want to lift the prints because “I worked as an auto detailer for 10 years and that could have happened for any number of reasons”. I responded (with my 7 YO son present) “Yeah? I worked as an auto mechanic for 15 years and that’s complete bullshit. These things don’t break spontaneously.” Fuckhead lifted the prints under duress and I’m sure they hit the garbage as soon as I went inside. Still pisses me off to this day. Lazy, stupid motherfucker.
What “qualifications” would you consider raising exactly?
Why is this? Seems like if you went the 2 year degree route you could easily find some ways to incentivize people.
Also, can someone explain where the 40% domestic abuse number comes from. Ive seen it quoted multiple times on this board but brief research makes it seem pretty flimsy.
Only study I can find involved 1100 police and that was from 1991.
I dont mean like a course to become an officer. It’s pretty common to just require a bachelor’s degree for city police across Canada, or if not “required” you’re at an extreme disadvantage without one with the amount of applications vs spots. I just worry this blocks out a lot of poorer/minority candidates.
You don’t need to incentive people to become cops. Unless you’re in a really rural spot, nowhere in NA has problems getting enough applicants.
PhD in Classical Greek imo. They need the job and it’ll be better for the community.
personally I am not gonna be the white guy telling a bunch of black people in the streets protesting the no consequences murder of their friends and family that they have a “messaging problem”
Especially if my counterpitch is “professionalize the police” sounds like we want to make the police better at the job of killing black people, no thanks
Do you have any ideas on what the ideal future looks like? Cuserounder had the best set of ideas Ive seen suggested.
Homelessness is a big part of this problem also. Letting cops deal with them as systemic default is pretty asinine.
Take that however you want but If you’ve managed a business in a downtown area and had to deal with mentally ill people there are not solutions.
In nearly every state the places with the most mentally ill people under their care are the correctional facilities.
For starters I’d send non police people in there to give them housing and healthcare
What? You don’t think other countries that don’t have 1% of it’s population incarcerated or 0.2% of it’s population homeless have as many mentally ill people as we do?
Even though cops are generally dicks, it’s not their fault that the states refuse to spend enough money so that the police aren’t the ones who have to try to shepherd the mentally ill homeless from one place to another, with occasional stops at the county jail.
