The politicians are going to try to just pass half measures if there’s no pressure on them. We end up with body cams that they turn off anyway. The threat of extra paid training isn’t going to change a thing.
Maybe it’s just me. My bro in law has been locked up for 20 years. The entire system sucks. If I push for half measures all my life, I’m even more complicit than I already feel in the fate of millions of people that will get sucked up in the system now and in the future.
I’d guess “Defund the Police” poles at 0% among racist police. I like that stat.
We went to visit my wife’s cousin and her husband back in January after the birth of their baby, and they had a huge - like 6’ x 4’ – BLM sign on their front lawn. I thought that was pretty cool, especially since her dad, (my wife’s uncle, a VP level finance guy), voted for Trump. I did notice on that visit that the Trump bumper sticker that had been on his truck for a couple of years was gone. I wanted to ask, but decided to keep my mouth shut.
Also, keep in mind, for the most part the police don’t work for Donald Trump. They work for cities. Mostly in Democrat controlled cities. If Watonga, Oklahoma wants to give all their cops Sherman Tanks, that’s their problem. If the major cities, the Democrats, cut billion dollar police budgets - great and Trump has nothing to do with it.
The problem is not in the ideas. As ChrisV showed they poll great.
I’m not sure what the argument is here. It doesn’t really matter whether the ideas underlying BLM were more or less provocative than Defund the Police.
The problem is very basic. To a low info voter, “Black Lives Matter” seems superficially fine (and a low info voter won’t have any idea about the movement in general nor will they care to find out, literally those three words is all they will know). To a low info voter, “Defund the Police” can sound scary and unreasonable, and once again, those three words are literally all they will know about it.
I’d care a good deal less about the whole labeling thing if beating Trump wasn’t so important.
Ok. They heard “kill whitey” and responded with “all lives matter”. Seriously, the reason they said “all lives matter” was because they took “Black lives matter” to be saying that white lives don’t.
Define perfectly fine? I want to live in a world where he can run on that, but i’m pretty sure MB mentioned he is not part of Biden strategy team quite yet. I think that if he gets the call (fingers crossed) he would opt for a different sticker.
That’s true in that it falls in the category of not worrying about things I have no control over and (as I’ve said repeatedly in the primary thread) he has a long record that I judge him by - so his platform doesn’t mean much to me.
But, if I were trying to help him win, I sure as hell wouldn’t make “Defund the Police” his slogan. He’d probably do better with “Build the Wall” but then a lot of Americans from both big parties are pretty racist and jingoistic.
I think analyzing what may have been going through the mind of a hypothetical white, low info voter is an exercise in futility.
I don’t think they heard “kill whitey”. I think they heard “They think they should be treated better than us”. Hence, they come back with “All lives matter”.
