Read the rooooooom
A WaPo expose describing how the AAU refuses to mandate background checks or mandatory abuse prevention training for coaches and volunteers, while also encouraging the participation of people who’ve been banned from other youth sports organizations.
Anyone here with a kid in youth sports should definitely read this!
An Op-Ed piece in the WSJ argues that it was inevitable that students would become socialists, given that they now can spend 4+ years doing nothing more than studying, partying, exercising, etc. within lavish campus facilities without having to worry about what anything costs.
I just turned my laptop on and it was finishing an update, with this message:
“You’re 30% there. Please keep your computer on.”
The language annoys me, though I’m struggling to articulate why. It feels like that type of language or framing is everywhere now, very “you” centric. Maybe it’s because it’s how LLMs talk. It feels dumbed down and childish. I’m not 30% there, my computer is 30% through its update.
(Ignore that the 30% is surely a made up number.)
I didn’t realize what I was reading at first. I thought it was some reverse double scam. But that is very cool of ms Rachel.
In my day we also chased skirts. Or dames, or broads, or whatever term we’re supposed to be using for chicks.
Why does someone four months from a doctoral degree and $4800 in loans need a go fund me? How does anyone know if this is a real person and not a scam? It appears that they were was just wasting time on twitter messaging every famous person for donations? That sounds like a bot.
This is the part that annoys me, especially when it says “100% done”.
Four semesters. Two years. $4800 short on tuition; I guess that’s just for the next semester. I assume Ms Rachel did some checking, maybe paid the school directly, but maybe not. It’s far from certain this person finishes their PhD. Still a good deed.
This isn’t exactly a new thing. Mark Twain paid for Warner T. McGuinn to go Yale.
‘‘He was one of the greatest lawyers who ever lived,’’ said Thurgood Marshall, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Justice Marshall, who as a young lawyer in Baltimore shared adjoining offices with McGuinn, said yesterday that McGuinn enjoyed the respect of the entire bar and judiciary.

Columbia House, the 71-year-old mail-order music club that is somehow still operating in 2026, is finally shutting down for good. ”After 9/15/26, The Columbia House will no longer be accepting new orders,” reads a recent message on its website.
Damn, would never have guessed they were still around, RIP to a real one.
Aw sweet, finally my subscription to the Gorilla Channel pays off:
I should sign my 4 year old up for some free CDs.
Getting those double CD albums was always fun
12 year old me owes them hundreds from 1998. Fill out a postcard and get free shit.
The reply reads like AI to me too.
I’ve been getting that kind of message, worded that way, long before LLMs.
