Ordering a bottle of water in Bangkok is standard. That it would cost more than my entire entree was unexpected.

Depends where, I guess. There is a lot of great street food where I wouldnā€™t be surprised by that at all.

Thereā€™s so much to hate about this that Iā€™m not really sure where to begin

I would absolutely do this just to make everyone mad.

Probably not as bad as it sounds

His EV on $500 of tickets is probably around $450, right?

I think most scratch games the odds to win any prize is between 3.5 to 4.5:1

California pays out 50% in prize money.

Wow! 50% is ridiculous. I never would have imagined it was that low anywhere.

Itā€™s just the first place I looked up. I just looked up:

Nevada pays out 60%
Iowa pays out 63%
Mass pays out 73%

According to NPR the average is about 60%.

According to South Dakotaā€™s lotto page, 95% of the money goes back to SD. They pay out 5%!

Damn. I donā€™t know why I assumed it was more.

Yeah. I donā€™t know what other states did, but when they rolled out the lotto in CA they made a big point about how much of the money would go to fund schools.

Lol McKinseyaments

The Nevada one is particularly hilarious. Iā€™m pretty sure Nevada has rules on how much casinos need to pay out on slots and other games, and Iā€™m also sure that number is a lot higher than 60%. But thatā€™s apparently fine when the state runs things.

However, gaming regulations require a minimum payback of 87% on any one machine and all machines within a casino must have an average payback of 90% to 95% .

I thought Nevada didnā€™t allow scratchers.

Not as far as anyone knows.
