2024 LC Thread

I actually have a fax number at work for reasons and I’ve literally never got a fax that wasn’t an obvious scam.

The OOT Knox thread is unironically one of my all time favorite things on the internet and a true testimate to the power of collaboration. I spent years fruitlessly trying to figure out a way to troll that thread but those guys left absolutely no meat on the bone. I actually know a guy who archives web pages for a living and it took all my self control to not point him towards that thread for preservation (the similarly brilliant “poker movies” thread was deleted years ago). I honestly think it should go in one of those alien gift boxes they put in the Voyager spacecrafts.

My favorite is an advertisement we get for tarot card reading and fortune telling services offered over fax

I use Faxage.com. Barebones but it works. No complaints.

Faxing should have been obsolete like 2 decades ago. LOL that it’s still a thing.

My wife works in insurance and said it’s still used in the medical industry in some instances for security reasons. You’d think they could just have a secure electronic system (MyChart!), but whatever.

I’ve had to send/receive faxes a handful of times in the last few years. I think I created a free trial on efax, which was fine. Also used a free mobile app called FaxBurner, which basically creates a burner fax number you can give to someone if they need to send you something. And you can type a fax message in the app or, if it’s more complicated and involves attachments, send an e-mail to a special address than sends a fax to the number you specify. Probably a bad option for someone who needs to use it a lot, but it was ok for a one-off.

I had to send a fax requesting a lein release to the bank that my old car loan was through. The loan had been paid off years ago and they made it sound like the record was in some dingy archive that apparently hadn’t acquired 21st centruy technology.

You laugh but I think ICQ only closed up shop a few years ago.

Edit: damn, no, it’s still up!

It’s actually ending in 3 weeks

RIP ICQ

Throttling is a crime

this guy emails

Someone had an old standup bit about the crime called “Mayhem” and how crazy that sounds compared to the names of other crimes.

You’re in jail with a bunch of people convicted of assault, burglary, etc and someone asked what you did and you just scream MAYHEM and they know not to fuck with you because you’re basically Hannibal Lecter.

That guy didn’t just assault his wife, what he did was so messed up we’re inventing new slang words for it.

Patrice Miller’s body was discovered inside her Downieville home on Nov. 8, 2023, by Sierra County Sheriff’s Office deputies who had been summoned to conduct a welfare check. Deputies discovered a grisly scene with evidence that a bear had been inside, likely for several days, feeding on the woman’s remains, authorities said.

Initially, investigators thought she had died prior to the bear’s entry. However, an autopsy report completed last month revealed that Miller was killed when the animal swiped or bit her neck, Sierra County Sheriff Mike Fisher told KCRA-TV.

Lovely

Yep, there are a ton of stories right now of bears in homes in the foothills. Nothing to worry about, totally natural, not a consequence of global warming or anything.

Read a great quote today in Naomi Klein’s recent book Doppelgänger that we could pay more heed to, myself included.

The lefts mantra should be,

Be hard on structures but soft on people.
