2023 LC Thread - It was predetermined that I would change the thread title (Part 1)

I bet the death penalty would deter more white-collar crime than street crime.

If you are getting the death penalty instead of a 30 year sentence, it doesnā€™t matter since the sentences are equivalent. If you were getting a year in jail but now getting the death penalty, it seems like it would matter.

I think they tried this in the Philippines

Also Singapore. I suspect finding Fentanyl there would difficult.

Of course, there are other factors involved.

Gonna have mixed feelings when one of these republicans gets necklaced.

He was not found with the drugs or during the delivery. But prosecutors said he had been responsible for co-ordinating it, and they traced two phone numbers used by a deliveryman back to him.

Just got a new glasses prescription filled for the first time in several years. Apparently my eyesight has improved to the point where Iā€™m no longer required to wear corrective lenses while driving, and my old glasses were too strong. Walking around in the world feels like I upgraded to a next-gen gaming console.

The same happened to me, although the process was caused by cateracts, and eventually my vision went blurry again until I had cataract surgery.

Bad news for doctors.

Does TCL make washers and dryers with built-in Roku?

I too have had good experiences with my LGs. Over the years Iā€™ve looked at getting new ones and based on my research I would never purchase any large Samsung appliance.

Iā€™ve only owned samsung refrigerators but this will be my last one. Thereā€™s a design flaw that causes them to leak water and itā€™s a bit of a pain in the ass to fix.

I think Iā€™ve fixed it, but if it acts up again weā€™ll be getting a new fridge.

Samsung appliances have been a straight disaster for me.

Interesting, we havenā€™t had any issue with ours but thatā€™s just one data point.

When we buy anything over a few hundred dollars we end up using the Consumer Reports reviews, and the Samsung w/d set we bought rated well on there for performance and reliability. Possibly it is an outlier among their products.

Anyways, the solution is for wokeness to be embraced as the roadmap for the moral formation that David Brooks longs for.

Havenā€™t read the article yet but I suspect that Brooks is the type to yearn for an imagined past where the moral eduction provided by basically conservative institutions yielded a broadly moral and polite society where everyone treated everyone else* with respect.

*except women, black people, indigenous people, LGBTQ+ people, etc, etc, etc., etc, but perhaps his moral calculus doesnā€™t include them

Brooks is just all about providing one-on-one moral education to his students.
