I’m not at all qualified to judge the paper, but it’s here.

From the methods section:

We used the Natural Scenes Dataset (NSD) for this project [1]. Please visit the NSD website for more details 1. Briefly, NSD provides data acquired from a 7-Tesla fMRI scanner over 30–40 sessions during which each subject viewed three repetitions of 10,000 images. We analyzed data for four of the eight subjects who completed all imaging sessions (subj01, subj02, subj05, and subj07). The images used in the NSD experiments were retrieved from MS COCO and cropped to 425 x 425 (if needed). We used 27,750 trials from NSD for each subject (2,250 trials out of the total 30,000 trials were not publicly released by NSD). For a subset of those trials (N=2,770 trials), 982 images were viewed by all four subjects. Those trials were used as the test dataset, while the remaining trials (N=24,980) were used as the training dataset.

Reminds me of that experiment where they had a monkey hooked up from his brain to a computer. They taught him how to like manipulate a robot arm to get a banana and monitored his brain stuff. Then they shifted control from the joystick to the brain interface, making the joystick a dummy control. Then halfway through the experiment the monkey stopped using the joystick and just used his brain to get the banana. Everyone was all OMG think of the implications.

That was over twenty years ago and the implications are…uh, I don’t think anything’s really come of that research.

Lol sounds like SnorKeeed is still using a joystick to get his bananas. Get with the program dude.

I volunteered to be hooked up to a video game kind of thing you were supposed to control via biofeedback 15 years or so ago. You were supposed to manipulate the cursor on the screen but it just seemed to move around randomly and I got frustrated so I didn’t go back for more sessions. Maybe that’s why I suck at video games.

I dunno, I float a few inches off the ground now, using my mind, instead of walking.

Wait, fuck, that’s the dream I have every night, each night thinking “whoa now this really works IRL, after all those times it was just a dream”

did they give you a banana as a reward? Maybe you just weren’t properly motivated.

Just wait until they develop this technology to show reconstructed video of people’s sexual fantasies.

I don’t really remember but I think you were supposed to kind of let it happen, and too much intention spoiled it. A potential reward might lead to worse performance. Chimpin’ ain’t easy.

That already exists.

Where can I watch videos of porn created by brain scans?

Technologies are just tools. If you want to use this specific tool to extract fantasies from strangers’ minds, I guess you have to wait. I wouldn’t be surprised if Elon had a timeline for you by the end of the day though.

But you said it already existed.

Ok, I lied. But a technology to do this already exists. It’s called language.

I saw something on 60 minutes not too long ago where they gave a guy a robotic prosthetic arm and hand, and wired it into his brain. After some training, he could control his robot hand and arm with his mind pretty well. I think that came out of DARPA research.

If I didn’t need to use a joystick, I could be eating bananas two-fisted while I play Mario Cart. I feel like this is the future I was promised.

Pretty sure The Secret is based on this pivotal research.
