Dunno if serious (or if you just mean because they are obsolete), but someone calls a phone number and the pager makes a noise and flashes a short message or just the call back number.

Yeah, I know about this (only happens with some lithium chemistries), but itâs a long way from that to triggering it remotely. They canât unroll the battery with some broadcast signal.
you should see what happens with sodium or potassium and water.
But maybe you can tinker with the design somehow; exchange some materials that somehow made this possible?
I just feel that simply putting some explosives in might have been detected. Remember that a Hamas or Hezbollah leader has already been killed with explosives in a cell phone, so they should check for stuff like this.
Also, reportedly, the pagers got warm/hot before they exploded; that wouldnât be necessary for a straight up, say, Semtex charge in the pager.
It was explosives in the pagers. Donât overthink it.
I hear you, but I donât think it was that simple. At least the explosives where inside the battery or something fancy like that.
If the middle man who supplied the pagers isnât already dead theyâre probably back in Israel. It will be a while before the baddies single source their electronicsâŚ

Israel is in such dissaray now from a leadership standpoint that I wouldnât be surprised if Mossad just gave up on coordinating this with the IDF and just said fuck it lets blow them up.

Gotta hand it to the Israelis on this one, pretty smart idea. Clearly they were the ones manufacturing the pagers as raising the temperature of the battery remotely would be impossible otherwise. If you disassembled one of the pagers you wouldnât notice anything wrong as there would apparently be no ignition device.
I wonder how the buying decision happened, maybe they just had intel that Hezbollah were looking to use pagers and rushed these things on to the market at a cheap price.
