it’s because they realize that could’ve easily been any of them, seeing it with your eyes is way different to people than not seeing it ever

I’m under the presumption of that as well, more likely in other sports but an extremely rare situation that happens in sports from time to time and that’s why we have all these medical professionals at the events.

On Chiefsplanet they posted a clip of a karate tournament where the guy got hit, went to bow after the match, and then just crumpled. Looked eerily similar to Hamlin.

chris pronger of the blues in 1998 playoffs took a slapshot to the chest and similar happened to him; he played another 12 seasons, the video is out there if you care which I don’t

true but he was conscious and even moving his arms while being carried off the ice

Now if Clint Malarchuk bled to death on the ice in the 80s instead of being saved, would the game have gone on?

I mean there’s totally a way to do it, play the game tomorrow and then have the Bills and Bengals play on Monday or Tuesday next week and give them a playoff game on Sunday or maybe Monday the week after that. I understand their concern for their teammate and not wanting to finish the game last night but I don’t really see how playing tomorrow night is much different than playing this Sunday.

um they aren’t playing tomorrow, and I think there is a clear difference between playing now (when they don’t know if he will live or die) and Sunday (when they may indeed know whether he will live or die).

It’s way different imo.

Of course there’s a difference. We don’t know if there’s any permanent neurological damage to Damar yet or if he can sustain himself without life support.

what does that mean though? Like i don’t get sentences like “Buffalo’s focus is solely on Damar Hamlin right now”. Are they gonna forfeit the season? Week 18 is in 5 days.

What is hard to understand about that sentence? The players are not preparing for a football game today, they are dealing with the trauma of watching one of their friends laying dead on the field while folks tried to restart his heart. Maybe they will start doing serious football business again, but not today. Maybe not tomorrow, and maybe not the next day. Instead they are focusing on their critically injured friend until something changes there.

The Bills of course are going to play.

One thing my buddy who was over to watch the game and I talked about last night is would you swap places with a highly paid NFL player? For most of these guys it is their dream job. They know the risks are there and have accepted them. Yes it sucks when something like this happens.

Honestly I’m stunned worse hasn’t happened sooner and more frequently considering the level and repetitiveness of the violence in football, especially the NFL.

If Hamlin’s condition isn’t resolved by Sunday, then Buffalo probably won’t play its Week18 game.

From what I understand, it appears there will likely be some clarification before then, so it will be a moot point.

The NFL already announced the game isn’t restarting this week. This tweet was just posted. So what does it mean in regards to the future. It explicitly says “surprised if the game resumes at all”. So the sentence doesn’t make much sense to me. Being surprised the game resumes at all and not being able to play today don’t really align.

They can just cancel that week 18 game too and give everyone some time to process and care for their friend and his family.

They can postpone it I suppose. Cancelling entirely seems just about impossible. I also doubt many players would want that.

I think I see what you are saying. Since the game is off for this week, restarting it would have to come after week 18, perhaps pushing the playoffs back a week. So, why would focusing on Damar today prevent them from being able to resume the game after week 18 concludes? I don’t suppose it necessarily would (unless the worst happens and the Bills cancel the rest of their season).

I took it more to mean that this guy doesn’t think that game will ever restart (“no clean way to do it” whatever that means) but nobody is worrying too much about that right now until there is more clarity on the situation.

I think the NFL canceling the game “for now” is a calculated risk, where they’re hoping desperately that the week 18 results shake out so that neither team cares that much about the result anymore and they’re OK just striking it from the schedule (like BUF picks up a game on KC or vice versa, and CIN clinches the division by beating BAL). If the only thing left at stake is the 2/3 seeds flip-flopping for example, with no bye at stake, they’d probably be fine letting it go.
