2022 Midterm Elections (Abandon hope all ye who enter here) butnahhh. or maybe?

Violent crime is much lower now than in the 80s and 90s in the US. Yes it is up a bit in the last few years. Feeding into these media fueled panics is part of the problem. I have posted this graph before:

Obviously you are correct except one key point. The actual truth does not matter at all.

Conservatives also quote raw crime numbers in a growing population to further mislead, i.e. if the population doubles and the number of homicides goes up by 10% this is called a SURGE IT MURDERS NEW ANNUAL RECORD WONā€™T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

It feels less safe, so the media gets more clicks on crime stories, which makes it feel less safe, so the media gets more clicks on crime stories.

Itā€™s almost like the cops just decided to stop doing their jobs to sink Krasner and Dems politically.

Almost. Anyway, guess we better give the cops more money!

Itā€™s actually worse. The truth is a hindrance. We would be more successful fighting this lie with another lie than we will ever be with the actual truth.

The real answer is to figure out what the root causes of why crime is rising (if it even actually is) and come up with a solution based on that.

The answer to why crime is rising is often rooted in poverty and systemic racism and other such things and the solutions to those issues is a little socialism-y, so we just donā€™t do that and fear monger about crime and give cops more shooty toys.

I think you are right but Iā€™m not real sure how that would even begin to happen here. You would have to convince corporate media and largely corporate zombie politicians to take this plan of action. They have no reason to do it when it is against their self interests. I mean hell we have Daniel Dale breathlessly fact checking Biden even slightly exaggerating his accomplishments.

I mean Philly elected a true progressive DA and the police hate him and suddenly they arenā€™t policing. Itā€™s as simple as that.

I lived in Baltimore after Freddie Gray, same thing happened.

The police are a protection racket.

The problem is facts have been tied to elitism and truth is now based on individual personal feelings not facts.

As for crime rates, it might be the least risky social science hypothesis ever to suggest that if you subject a society to a once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic, coupled with massive job loses and huge economic swings that crime would be predicted to go up.

The truly surprising outcome would have been no increase in crime.

Tucker is an artist. Thatā€™s impressive stuff right there.

I think there is lots of blame to go around. Something really changed after Nutter and Ramsey left. Seemed pretty competent when we moved here, handled protests well, etc.

Krasner ideals where fine. Too dogmatic and execution lacked. Trumpification of the police. Now itā€™s just a damn mess.

Just watching some clips of Obama stumping for Fetterman.

The man seems like he is even better at this than he used to be.

Or, everyone else sucks so much that he just seems even better.

Yeah, itā€™s probably the second one.

Imagine if Obama and his team had put those skills to good use while he was in office. Maybe then we wouldnā€™t have seen the GOP takeover everything.

doesnā€™t matter, itā€™s clearly going up from where it was, like gas prices it doesnā€™t matter, itā€™s just perception from where you were to where you are. (ie why everything is so ā€œbadā€ now when itā€™s way better than most periods in history still)

I had meant to reply to this! Just wanted to say I hadnā€™t considered the sexual nature of his insults. I hope you didnā€™t feel singled out. I mean I had hoped that already, and itā€™s not so much BECAUSE of how your joke works so well which I hadnā€™t realized, but that does amplify it a bit I suppose

The FYI still holds in general principle, but Iā€™m not sure if maybe everybody on this website already kinda knew it. Just been extra on guard lately. For some unhealthy reasons as well as neutral or healthy reasons lol

Maybe thereā€™s 214,000 eligible young voters. So it jumped from 7% to 28%

Probably not

Its fine no problem I probably wouldnā€™t like it much in your shoes either. Actually saw the same image posted on reddit and the top of the comments were all similar in vein to my ā€œjokeā€ which was a little surprising so Iā€™m not a total deplorable I guess.

Interesting that the message not mentioning Republicans polled the best.
